On the Necessity of Gardening - An ABC of Art, Botany and Cultivation
Isbn 9789493246003 Publisher Valiz Idea code 21470 € 29.90
'On the Necessity of Gardening' tells the story of the garden as a rich source of inspiration. Over the centuries artists, writers, poets, and thinkers have each described, depicted, and designed the garden in different ways. In medieval art, the garden was a reflection of paradise, a place of harmony and fertility, shielded from worldly problems. In the eighteenth century this image tilted: the garden became a symbol of worldly powers and politics. The Anthropocene is forcing us to radically rethink the role we have given nature in recent decades. Through essays and an extensive abecedarium this book reflects on the garden as a metaphor for society.

New Standards - Timber Houses Ltd 1940 - 1945
Isbn 9789527222133 Publisher Garret Publications Idea code 21420 € 42.90
‘New Standards’ examines the conditions that affect standard, industrial, and manufactured buildings by revisiting a forgotten chapter of wood construction in post-war Finland. Puutalo Oy (Timber Houses Ltd.) was established in 1940 as part of Finland’s response to the war refugee crisis. The company quickly became one of the largest manufacturers of prefabricated wooden buildings – tens of thousands were shipped from Finland to every inhabited continent, constructing a largely overlooked legacy of housing and urbanisation. A new perspective on this legacy is given through careful analysis of these buildings and projects as they emerged from a rapidly changing political landscape.

Spectre 3: Contemporary Ruins
Isbn 9782491039066 Publisher Cosa Mentale Idea code 21416 € 40.85
The third issue of ‘Spectre’ invites various artists to deliver their interpretation of contemporary ruins. Ruins are necessary because they question our historical records, making us fleetingly aware of a distance between a past meaning, which has been abolished, and a present perception, which is incomplete. They introduce a temporal doubling, where the present is no longer the epicentre of our perceptions. It is uncertain whether future history will be capable of generating new ruins, but the contemporary capacity to leave significant ruins is undoubtedly certain. Our era has and will continue to produce abandoned, unfinished, deteriorated, and rapidly obsolete spaces.

Working Environments. Spaces Of Productivity
Isbn 9783946154532 Publisher Deutscher Architektur Verlag Idea code 21457 € 60.25
Our way of working is subject to constant processes of transformation. From the challenges and opportunities of digitalisation and issues of sustainability in production, administration, and office structures, to healthcare strategies and contemplation, architecture must translate influences on the realm of work into space. We need workplaces that not only provide the materials for carrying out professional activities but also contribute to identification and well-being. With high standards in architecture and interior design, these innovative and game-changing working environments respond to the desire for concentration and optimised workflows while also focusing on the people who work there.

Apollo Architects & Associates Vol 2
Isbn 9791188529131 Publisher Nemo Factory Idea code 21344 € 128.05
This second monograph covers projects between 2006 and 2020 by Apollo Architects & Associates, which Satoshi Kurosaki established at the turn of the 21st century. Since that time, Apollo has completed around 200 projects and is currently growing and broadening its design areas to include residential projects as well as hotel design. The firm’s simplistic architecture represents the human effort to pursue timeless beauty at its essence while seeking constant change – buildings that are admired but are also able to satisfy functional purposes and safety needs. These are creative spaces that meet and exceed the expectations of clients and society, aesthetically and logically.

Atmosphere and Building Culture
Isbn 9788792700346 Publisher The Architectural Publisher B Idea code 21409 € 33.00
With this study, architect and educator Anders Gammelgaard Nielsen aims to shed light on the relationship between the way we build and the atmosphere in our spaces. He selected nine spaces, different in both character and underlying building culture, where each offers its own contained universe. Examining them chronologically, it becomes apparent that variation decreases as building culture transitions from artisan-based to industrial processes. This is also marked by decisive changes in their atmospheres. Gammelgaard Nielsen’s research uncovers a cultural shift where, in the space of a few generations, we have moved from warm emanations to cold rationality.

A+U 611 21:08 Nenia Project - Smiljan Radic
Isbn 9784900212664 Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha Idea code 21403 € 23.90
This issue features the work of Chilean architect Smiljan Radić. It opens with Nenia Project, which reveals the visions of the past and future that drive his architectural approach. The project is a sort of memoir by Radić, a collection of metaphorical manifestos and artefacts that have equipped him with “subversive artistic strategies” and “scores for object-based works”. Ranging from sculptures to buildings, 25 key works are presented along with Radić’s own conceptual drawings and paintings. All were produced between 2010 and 2021. Adding depth to the collective sense of temporal progression of the works are two essays by Ryue Nishizawa and Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen.

Isbn 9784900212657 Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha Idea code 21356 € 23.90
This issue brings forward the work of six architectural practices, each of which provides a statement on the meaning of life, place, and form. Guest editor Go Hasegawa belongs to the same generation as these offices, who all share a similar attitude towards the house and its relationship to the world beyond. In her essay, Giovanna Borasi discusses the evolving concept of lifecycle and work, new models of co-living, and a perceived misalignment between new societal needs and the architecture that accommodates them. The featured practices are: 6a architects (London), Vector Architects (Beijing), MOS (New York), adamo-faiden (Buenos Aires), and HARQUITECTES (Barcelona).

Isbn 9791188529162 Publisher Nemo Factory Idea code 21345 € 96.05
Having worked together at Junya Ishigami + Associates in 2004 and 2005, Kentaro Kurihara and Miho Iwatsuki decided to establish Studio Velocity in 2006. Since then, they have pursued an innovative vision of small-scale residential architecture and dwellings which soften the boundaries between interior and exterior, allowing the proximity of natural elements to enhance and benefit everyday urban living spaces and attitudes. In their practice, they investigate the possibility of urban space and new architecture by expanding the range that is considered the environment. This large monographic volume allows a detailed look at the studio’s numerous projects throughout Japan.

Kiyokazu Arai - Architectural Composition With Ordering Principles In Scale
Isbn 9784904894491 Publisher Flick Studio Idea code 21363 € 32.85
Kiyokazu Arai began his professional career in 1982 when, as a student at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, he joined Morphosis, the office founded ten years earlier by Thom Mayne. As Mayne writes in his introduction to this monograph, “Though we didn’t speak the same verbal language it was clear from the first weeks that we spoke from a remarkably copacetic and familiar visual one”. The two would work together for ten years, until Arai returned to Japan and started his own firm, Arai Architects. The publication traces his evolution as an architect from the very beginning until the present day, detailing shifts in thinking and notable projects each step of the way.

Arquitectura Viva 235: Reiulf Ramstad
Isbn 02141256 Publisher Avisa Idea code 21335 € 18.20
In this issue, the magazine examines the work of the Norwegian studio Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter. With a style often referred to as revitalised Nordic and characterised by its contemporary use of natural materials, the studio’s Scandinavian sensibility is a living reality that is far from becoming any kind of trademark. The four projects highlighted here, two in Norway and the others in Denmark and France, present daring forms that nevertheless draw inspiration from the context and local material culture. A second feature in this issue looks at new architecture in France, such as the Centre for Circus Arts by NP2F and a stacked tower of unobstructed spaces in Caen by Bruther.

The Dutch Look At A House
Isbn 9788875708412 Publisher Corraini Edizioni Idea code 21329 € 15.15
At first glance a children’s book, Jeane D'aam’s illustrated story is actually an introduction to modern Dutch architecture. Everything starts with a square. A square can be rotated, doubled, divided in two, and then again in four. Its corners can then be cut, stretched, and more. One page at a time, the shape of a house begins to appear. The Dutch, however, love houses with low roofs in the countryside, so these shapes change again to become hexagonal. In cities, on the other hand, a lot of rectangular houses are needed, perhaps joined together by a bridge. Finally, by adding doors, windows, and a touch of colour, this series of geometric shapes turns into perfect Dutch houses.
