Henk Wildschut - Afstand

Isbn 9789082588521
Publisher Henk Wildschut
Idea code 21460
€ 45.00

Anne Geene Book Of Plants

Isbn 9789069060538
Publisher De Hef
Idea code 21390
€ 59.50

The ‘Book of Plants’ is a eulogy on plants in all their appearances, a continuation of an oeuvre that is an expression of the remarkable beauty of the unremarkable. Anne Geene’s quest for specimens with various types of appearances and deformations gives the book a teratological dimension. In her work, the photograph itself is rarely the focus. Taken out of context, the pictures are often no more than a registration of an inconspicuous fact. This means that her art is about collection, about the image in relation to other images and the ability to creates new ones by merging and arranging them. Enjoy an expedition through all of the botanical micro- and macrocosms.

Jana Hartmann - Mastering the Elements

Isbn 9789492051653
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 21487
€ 38.00

Despite the significance of the natural sciences for humanity’s present and future, the principles of today’s scientific practices are often not exposed to the broad social discourse they deserve. Through a combination of philosophy and photography, Jana Hartmann produces a visual exploration of the history of alchemy and science. In the book, she initiates an intriguing dialogue on reductionistic and holistic worldviews, using excerpts from both alchemical writings and modern scientific publications, interwoven with selectively framed images of scientific phenomena. In examining humanity’s conquest of nature, Hartmann fosters curiosity towards a world that all too often remains opaque.

Daan Wubben - Peacekeepers

Isbn 9789090337616
Publisher Studio Daan Wubben
Idea code 21381
€ 35.00

The world of toy guns is an imaginative realm of brightly coloured water pistols and oddly shaped laser weapons. Yet it is also a world of eerily realistic guns that can easily be mistaken for the real thing. ‘Peacekeepers’ is a selection of 100 EU-approved toy guns and forms part of Daan Wubben’s research into toy gun design and regulations in the European Union. Contrary to the many strict technical and biological aspects of toy safety, the laws lack references to either ethics or security. It does not matter what a toy looks like, meaning you must decide which gun-like objects are acceptable as toys. The series progresses from the most outlandish designs to those that appear real. Published by Studio Daan Wubben, in collaboration with graphic designer Pim Waalen.

Mark Peckmezian - Nice

Isbn 9789492811943
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 21488
€ 36.00

You look nice. How exhilarating and terrifying to be looked at, to be seen – to realize you’ve been an image this whole time. All that patient primping, that painstaking preparation, suddenly confronted with its own potential: This is me! you say, aspirationally tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear, I’m trying to look like me! You turn to face the audience, and in that state of perpetual becoming, you wonder: Will my outside ever meet my inside? Will I see it when it does?

Paparazzi - Mazaccio & Drowilal

Isbn 9782492175053
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 21476
€ 27.00

To realise their photo collages and installations, artist duo Elise Mazaccio and Robert Drowilal draw from popular images of contemporary culture, intentionally torn from their usual context. By using diverse techniques, deliberately bright colours, and irony, the two French artists transform these images and question the conventional principles of artistic photography. ‘Paparazzi’ takes its subject matter from its namesake: stolen snapshots of celebrities. Juxtaposing heterogenous and often contradictory images and blurring the boundaries between natural and artificial, Mazaccio & Drowilal at once provoke and doom the viewer in an extraordinary artistic experiment.

Philippe Durand - Inner Space/chauvet

Isbn 9791090306974
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 21477
€ 40.85

In ‘Inner Space’, photographer Phillipe Durand (1963) ventures deep into the heart of the Chauvet Cave in southern France, which has been closed to the public since its discovery in 1994. It is one of the oldest painted caves known to the world. Able to fully distance himself from objective representations of this important site, he takes up the artistic challenge to offer a more intimate and subjective view of the cave and the art it holds. To achieve this, Durand combines colour filters with multiple exposure techniques. He unearths the idea of a cave as a place of dreams and imagination, leading the viewer on a psychedelic journey through this celebrated site for prehistoric art.

Tabitha Soren’s project 'Surface Tension' is made by shooting the grime and debris that accumulates on her iPad. The background images are appropriated from her various devices through social media, images texted to her, and from her browsing web history. Soren creates the images about digital culture with an analogue large format camera. The vigorous and expressive gestures on the surface of the image reject the conflict between reality and fiction and between our embodied lives and our online, mediated lives.

Alice Rosati - I Am A Mermaid

Isbn 9780995761179
Publisher Kahl Editions
Idea code 21495
€ 51.60

Alice Rosati’s mermaid is an archetypal image representing a woman who is navigating life’s deep waters and inherent turmoil of emotions and sexuality. Sheathing herself in gold lamé and posing in numerous locations around the world, the mermaid searches for a place where she belongs, never to find it. Rosati’s long-term photographic project spans five years, yet she is always wearing the same mermaid suit. Over time, the fabric gradually becomes visibly worn and chafed. She becomes a paragon of the struggle of being in the world, a symbol of inadequacy. Yet she also shows how to embrace our instinctual sensuality, the wisdom of our body, and the relation of our spirit.

Charbon

Publisher Kahl Editions
Idea code 21494
€ 53.75

Entering the intimacy of the alternative Parisian scene, ‘Charbon’ portrays a new generation of artists – authors, photographers, illustrators, performers, musicians, poets – all of whom play a role in shaping the creative singularity. With contributions from 50 participants, the collection turns a voyeuristic gaze on the city’s nightlife and cultural undercurrents, opening a portal onto the risqué, the fetishistic, the hedonistic, and perhaps even the forbidden. All kinds of captivating personas emerge from the murky corners of the French party underground, posing proudly or caught in the camera’s flash. ‘Charbon’ also takes the form of a film, a copy of which is included with this publication.

Paul Seawright - Beasts Of Burden

Isbn 9783946770787
Publisher Strzelecki Books
Idea code 21467
€ 17.80

Photographer Paul Seawright gained attention for his early work in his home city of Belfast, where he documented sites of sectarian murders during the Troubles. With ‘Beasts of Burden’, he adds a new facet to his existing body of work: portraiture. The series focuses on “Cows for Peace”, a project taking place mainly in rural areas of Rwanda. Like many similar efforts, its aim is to tackle the enormous emotional burden of the country’s terrible genocide and enact the reconciliation necessary for the survival of communities. To promote renewed understanding through action, two neighbours – one a perpetrator, the other a survivor – are given a cow to rear, care for, and use together.

Antonio M. Xoubanova - Graffiti

Isbn 9782492175046
Publisher RVB Books
Idea code 21475
€ 40.85

Xoubanova’s book 'Graffiti' evokes the urban artistic movement that appeared in the 1970s in New York, renowned for its egocentric and identity-affirming dimension. It is the act of marking public space in the city with one’s name, of repeating one’s tag from street to street, of declaring one’s existence that interests Xoubanova here. In this phenomenon he sees a parallel with current social media practices and contemporary advertising discourse that he has been studying for a long time. Xoubanova devoted four years to building this hybrid body of photographic work, which brings together images alluding to a range of subjects, from communication and nature to social networking.

The book delves deeply into the different practices, iconologies, rituals, protest and media strategies, as well as into politics.

Christian Vogt - Skinprints

Isbn 9783906822402
Publisher Sturm & Drang
Idea code 21453
€ 37.25

Everything seems understandable if it has once been thought or experienced. This statement forms the basis for Christian Vogt’s “Skinprints”, a collection of thoughts reflecting observations, insights, and perceptions he has made over time. Among them are experiences that will be familiar to some, while others describe concepts that are more difficult to grasp, metaphysical experiences which are perhaps not so easily articulated. The printed words are in fact rubber stamp impressions on the skin and not image manipulation. The majority are written in English and applied to the palm of the hand, which Vogt has then carefully photographed.
