In a few short years during World War 2, the previously uninhabited island of Adak in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, bordered to the north by the Bering Sea, was made into the fourth largest city in the territory of Alaska. At the height of the Cold War, six thousand military personnel and their families lived in Adak. In March of 1997, with the Cold War over, the Navy abandoned the island. Today, less than seventy-five people live there amongst the crumbling buildings and fading memory of our past military ambitions.

The Swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger (1921–2006), best known for his edgy archive of queer youth and teenage misfits, also made several trips to the Mediterranean region in his lifetime. A few of the photos he took there are widely recognised, but most have never before been published. Many were shot in and around Agrigento, as well as the Lipari Islands, Lampedusa, Lecce, and Naples. He also visited Tangier in 1963 and 1964. His interest was not limited to men and their physiques, however, as he also documented the traditional life of Southern Europe, in the cities and the countryside, at the ports and the beaches, often imbuing these subjects with a filmic quality.

The pictures tourists took home would frequently include the German Sheperd belonging to local photographer George Nitescu. The dog was a familiar and popular fixture in the town. Hours after capturing their moment with the dog, the pictures could be collected from Nitescu’s urban villa, a place where tourists and locals often mingled. Adding to the history of art inspired by found objects are Richard Dawson’s flower works. The origins of these works were visits to an East London street market, where Dawson noticed the myriad discarded blooms that comprise much of the market’s detritus after closing, many trodden down onto the road and pavement. Intrigued, he sought to recreate them as images by using a scanner. As a result, no cameras, film, or photo development were part of the production of these images. It is a kind of technological reproduction which is unusually faithful, capturing the fine detail of the distressed yet still stunning flora and tapping into the history of botany as well as Victorian arts and crafts.
