This Is Bliss - Jon Horvath
Isbn 9789083165868 Publisher Fw: Books Idea code 22134 € 45.00
'This Is Bliss' is a transmedia narrative project investigating the vanishing roadside geography and culture of a rural Idaho town named Bliss. The project considers how mythologies of place and happiness collide, and are frequently confounded, in a location with a complex narrative of booms and busts that reflects the complicated history of American Idealism and Manifest Destiny. All that remains in Bliss is two gas stations, a school, a church, a diner, and two saloons to service its 300 current residents. Through a thorough look at the contemporary landscape and its residents, This Is Bliss contrasts romantic visions of the American West with its contemporary reality and considers how the heights of idealism are envisioned on both a personal and cultural level.

Tine Bek - The Vulgarity of Being Three-Dimensional
Isbn 9788797052099 Publisher Disko Bay Idea code 22093 € 40.00
In her first monograph Danish photographic artist Tine Bek tries to escape strict hierarchical structures through a series of aesthetic experiments. The book presents images of shapes that run over, flow, crumble and bulge out. An excess of uncontrolled forms that in the sculptural tradition have been dismissed as vulgar or possibly baroque. The book is a mix of still life, other found forms and created sculptural forms photographed. Fruit, material, fabric and figures are brought together and changed by subtle shades of colour.

In the Shadow of Trees
Isbn 9782960251944 Publisher Hangar Idea code 22082 € 39.80
The images gathered here create a canopy that is rich in meaning and which contributes to a debate about the separation between artistic savoir faire and the scientific understanding of nature and its spiritual, cultural, and political implications. The tree is a powerful subject in this respect, raising questions about the purpose of our civilisation and its relationship with nature. After all, the tree needs our unconditional protection as a key element in a balanced biodiversity. Organised as part of the PhotoBrussels Festival 06, this catalogue appears with the 2022 group exhibition ‘In the Shadow of Trees’, featuring seventeen photographers and the three festival prize-winners.

Patrick Wack - Dust
Isbn 9782492696022 Publisher Andre Frere Editions Idea code 22081 € 50.55
Situated in Central Asia, Xinjiang is an autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China traditionally inhabited primarily by Uyghurs, in addition to significant populations of Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Mongolian and other minorities. Patrick Wack traversed this massive territory, three times the size of France, with camera in hand to gain a sense of its history, people, and current state of unrest due to China’s crackdown on its Muslim population. Islamophobia in China has flared in recent years due to reports of radicalised Uyghur volunteers fighting for ISIS in Syria and elsewhere. Wack counters this with a riveting account of his experiences in a place where the dust is omnipresent.

Isbn 9789077966921 Publisher Archis Idea code 22135 € 34.00
Published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the confederation of the United Arab Emirates, ‘50U’ tells the story of the seven Gulf states in 50 portraits of people, plants, and places. Designed by Irma Boom, the book paints an intimate picture of life in the Emirates through the memories, hopes, and ambitions of its inhabitants. Over a period of just half a century, they have witnessed the transformation of a partly nomadic, partly urbanised community into a metropolitan and globally active society, from open desert to high-rise buildings. Numerous interviews with people from all walks of life give a first-hand impression of what it has been like to grow up or settle in the region.

Julie Joubert - Mido
Isbn 9780995761193 Publisher Kahl Editions Idea code 22104 € 48.40
French photographer Julie Joubert embraces social themes to highlight those who are continually side-lined. In applying her almost documentary style, she invites the viewer to change their perception of these individuals through the sublimation of their faces and bodies. She maintains a certain distance, yet also attempts to highlight the authenticity of her subjects. In ‘MIDO’, Joubert’s first book, she follows Ahmed in his daily life. After meeting him at a social reintegration centre for young people, she realised how he wants to hide as much as he wants to be noticed. Her photographic portrait reveals her subject’s fragility, self-destructive nature, even his ability to reveal himself.

Encyclopedia of Flowers Volume 5: 2019–2021: The Power of Awakening
Isbn 9784861528774 Publisher Seigensha Idea code 22122 € 41.45
For more than a decade, this series has been the passion of floral artist Azuma Makoto and photographer Shiinoki Shunsuke. Its fifth volume was produced over a two-year period coinciding with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the midst of their work, the pair found a book about the origins of traditional ikebana. During a terrible famine in 15th-century Kyoto, a group of monks not only provided warm meals and shelter but also arranged flowers to give people comfort and hope. Moved by this episode and its resonances in the world today, Azuma and Shiinoki were convinced that they should return to the roots of their art, touching people through the pages of their book.

These Birds Of Temptation - Intercalations 6
Isbn 9783981863543 Publisher K. Verlag Idea code 22147 € 29.00
‘These Birds of Temptation’ is a queer refrain, populated with both acoustical lines of flight and the sorrows of captivity. Here the reader-as-exhibition-viewer dives into an ornithological adventure, an erratic ensemble of feathers, flight, song, loss, escape, and evasion, from the birds of New Zealand and the song of the wood pewee, to looking at a blackbird or imagining you were a bluebird. Together the contributions include a series of object lessons, poetic visions, short stories, and theoretical reflections by various individuals, including Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy, Mark Dion, Yoko Tawada, Sophia Graefe, Ari Bayuaji, Anaïs Nin, Bertolt Brecht, Nina Katchadourian, and more.

Federico Antonini - Simplifying My Library
Isbn 9783952489475 Publisher Everyedition Idea code 22069 € 17.25
This visual essay was created by Federico Antonini by combining various images that are linked through the theme of backward shelving – the defunctionalizing practice of positioning books in bookcases with the backs facing the wall and the counter-back (or fore edge) towards the observer. This trend has gained in popularity in recent years with furniture sellers as a way to avoid copyright infringements or complaints of surreptitious advertising. From there it has spread to the fashionable realm of home décor that leans towards a superficial minimalism. But in reality, this practice has a much older and deeply rooted history in publishing, something which Antonini relates here.

Stéphane Ruchaud - Skatepark Continua
Isbn 9791097416218 Publisher Rue Du Bouquet Idea code 22077 € 33.60
As part of its initiative to transform an old industrial mill into a contemporary art spot for Galleria Continua in France, MBL Architectes teamed up with Bureau David Apheceix and Camille Frechou to construct a skatepark in an area of structural remnants, horticultural plants, and wild endemic species. They drew inspiration from the fluidity of 1970s skateparks designed around the premise of non-standard architecture, mingling existing greenery with the curvaceous lines of raw concrete. Integrated into its surroundings, the project becomes a vital part of the former industrial landscape and is conceived as a continuous strip that connects various features on an undulating foundation.

Vari Caramés 1980-2021
Isbn 9788412426014 Publisher Fabulatorio Idea code 22103 € 45.95
Published in conjunction with an exhibition in Madrid dedicated to the self-taught Spanish photographer Vari Caramés, this book is structured on the basis of three open concepts – something, nothing, always – allowing a continuous transfer and interconnection between the images, which in turn expresses the spirit of this artist’s work. It presents a selection of his most iconic images together with a journey through various creative phases, from black-and-white photography to portraits, still lifes, landscapes, street photography, and more. Although it is not intended as a formal retrospective, the content nevertheless spans the majority of his output since the 1980s.

Maria Sánchez Renero - El Cimarrón y su Fandango
Isbn 9781739881306 Publisher Kahl Editions Idea code 22105 € 53.75
During the colonial period in the Americas, a ‘cimarrón’ was a fugitive black slave who lived a free life in isolated corners of society. Starting in 1570, a large number of African slaves were brought to Mexico as a labour force. The number of black persons in the territory peaked around 1742, and today about 10% of Mexico's population identifies as black. Through her encounters with Afro-descendant culture, photographer Mara Sánchez Renero became aware of its importance and invisibility in the history of Mexico. In this book she explores in an allegorical manner this community’s journey through colonial history and its integration and current sense of identity in today’s Mexico.

This Naked Incident - Alexander van der Heide & Sander Coers
Isbn 9789492852502 Publisher Jap Sam Books Idea code € 30.00
This Naked Incident is a deep dive in search of the place that 'masculinity' holds in the lives of young people today. Alexander van der Heide and Sander Coers spoke with five peers; all assigned male at birth and all with very different experiences of masculinity and equally different gender expressions. Because what is masculinity? Where it sometimes seems that we have no more than stereotypes to resort to in our efforts to make this tangible, it turns out there are specific moments, charged by the people around you, and the places where you are, that suddenly allow for room to modify the way you express yourself.
