Wood - Vandkunsten Architects

Isbn 9789189270008
Publisher Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing
Idea code 22565
€ 45.15

Wood is a living material, and humans have evolved a special relationship between this particular material and our bodies. While technological developments make this traditionally low-tech material into a digitalised and energy-efficient building material, wood’s naturally smart properties in turn give us healthy interiors, low-maintenance exteriors, and pleasant living spaces. This publication features nine recent wood-based projects by Danish studio Vandkunsten Architects, which has shaped the contemporary use of wood in Nordic architecture for over five decades. Featured projects include the Arctic House in Greenland and flexible housing in Lisbjerg Bakke.

Publisher Jap Sam Books
Idea code 22546

Solar energy needs a new narrative - one that says goodbye to old perspectives and only talks about the efficiency and the payback time of blue solar panels. This book is divided into three parts: the first part explains how we designed with the sun in the past, providing a visual timeline of the historical development of solar power. The second part discusses the present: Where are we now and what is solar design? It provides examples of innovative solar design in architecture, fashion, mobility and product design. Finally, the last part looks at the future and asks how we can ensure solar energy does not become the asbestos of the 21st century.

We discuss the concept of home with the renowned artist Miriam Bäckström and the architect Eero Koivisto, of architecture and design practice Claesson Koivisto Rune, who shares his favourite objects with us. Isbn 9783856764272
Publisher gta Verlag
Idea code 22498
€ 53.10

Postwar West German architecture had to confront legacies from National Socialism and drastic privation that hampered construction. As industrial production recovered and a middle-class nation emerged, so too did a new architecture influenced by the American International Style model. At its center were Hans Schwippert and Sep Ruf. Schwippert, architect of the new Bonn parliament, worked to align economic redevelopment and a burgeoning consumer goods industry with design. Ruf, to whom Schwippert directed the commission for West Germany’s first World’s Fair pavilion, mastered architectural construction amidst both scarcity and largess.

Publisher Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing
Idea code 22492
€ 58.05

Founded in 2001 and based in Aarhus, CEBRA has since seen significant growth in the scale and complexity of the projects they encompass. This fourth instalment in a series of monographs on the iconic design firm sees it expanding internationally to Toronto, Monterrey, Abu Dhabi, and elsewhere across the globe. Interestingly, a pattern emerges when projects from 2013 to 2020 are chronologically organised. In both large and small projects, bold expressions and CEBRA’s signature crystalline geometry are tempered through a sense of approachability, tactility, and co-authorship. The book features 35 new projects and an interview with designboom’s Philip Stevens.

School squares | Reinventing the dialogue between school and city

Isbn 9791254930144
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 22591
€ 18.95

The entrance of every school is a place of high potential: in this book Paolo Pileri, Cristina Renzoni and Paola Savoldi call it “school square” and explore its fundamental role for the whole city. It’s in the space in front of the school that, experiencing the first moments of autonomy, we elaborate representations and memories of the environment that surrounds us; here the younger generations directly experience how their rights and needs are considered by our society. That is why we should urgently focus on the issue of school squares, observing and reinventing these often neglected spaces: this books invites us to imagine possible solutions to critical situations, in real contexts – here analysed through the tools of drawing and photography – and takes inspiration from a number of international examples.

Aires Mateus - Chapel Of Santiago

Isbn 9789895440191
Publisher A+a Books
Idea code 22550
€ 25.80

According to Portuguese architect Francisco Aires Mateus, the chapel is an old project. The extended time it takes for such projects to mature allows and nurtures a ceaseless change in both geography and time itself. The chapel is located in the Alentejo region of south-central Portugal, in an area closer to the sea. Elements of the project are shared in this small and sober booklet, such as impressions of the surrounding landscape and drawings by the architect. Catholic theologian and professor José Tolentino de Mendonça contributed the accompanying introspective text, ‘Notes on the Silence of a Place’.

José Adrião Arquitetos - No Beginning No End

Isbn 9789893325186
Publisher A+A Books
Idea code 22551
€ 32.25

In the approach of Portuguese practice José Adrião Arquitetos, a perceptive, forward-looking contemplation of a space serves as a starting point for determining its potential for regeneration. It is an idea of the future that always contains the past. The places we encounter have neither a beginning nor an end; they are the product of successive periods of time, layer upon layer. The idea behind this book was to capture recollections of the continually evolving working processes that have resulted in various designs and projects. Fifteen selected works constructed in the decade between 2010 and 2020 are featured which have proven particularly significant for the studio.

Isbn 9791254930199
Publisher Corraini Edizioni

The Role of the Rug in Arts, Crafts and Design – published to mark the exhibition of the same name at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome – offers a fascinating, open, and disruptive interpretation of the interconnected world in which we live. Intertwingled started as an original project to explore, through the artworks and the objects in the context of the exhibition and the museum, rugs and tapestries in different fields: art, craft, design.

Henk Wolvers - The Golden White 2009–2022

Isbn 9789077955475
Publisher Henk Wolvers
Idea code 22544
€ 34.00

Henk Wolvers is known for his deep attachment to porcelain. As an artist who produces contemporary ceramics and has worked in Japan, he is drawn to its essence and places emphasis on its simplicity and inherent beauty. Both the material itself and the pieces he makes with it reflect the way he sees the world: subdued, balanced, careful, modest, and with consideration for others. The result must be logical, free, flowing, and uncomplicated. The period from 2009 to 2022 is covered in this illuminating overview of Wolvers and his work, initiated by historian Jan van Oudheusden. The book also offers a glimpse into his home and studio, a repurposed school building from the 1950s. Design: Irene van den Hurk.
