Is the world better off with your building? In 99.9% of cases the answer is “No”. Almost every building pollutes the air, water, and soil and damages biodiversity. What if we turned that around and focused on making a positive contribution? If buildings purify, create biodiversity, and generate more energy than we use, then we can perhaps heal the world with our buildings. 'Building with a Positive Footprint' offers an accessible explanation for the construction industry on how to build in a radically sustainable way and outlines why this is not yet happening.

Oase 112: Ecology & Aesthetics

Isbn 9789462086838
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 22610
€ 24.95

The field of architecture’s shift towards sustainable thinking in recent decades, from innovation in energy technologies to the use of circular materials, often places ecological questions outside of design itself. In its focus on the intersection between ecology and aesthetics in architecture, this instalment situates the thinking about such issues at the heart of the discipline. Through examples and projects, it explores the field of tension between architectural aesthetics and topical themes such as energy, technology, and materiality. Ecological practices in architecture must be effective in providing solutions while also raising questions about beauty, affections, and perception.

By addressing its many different facets, from cities to regions and interiors, and looking beyond the physical structures and architecture to examine the economic, political, ecological, and social aspects of cities, it seeks to discover the potential as well as the shortcomings of the unfinished. In this sense, “unfinished urbanism” is a truly global topic. Despite some success stories, most unfinished structures remain as symbols of decay, financial hurdles, or corruption in cities, often leading to further challenges.
