Flaneur issue 09: Paris Boulevard Périphérique

Isbn 9772196537004
Publisher Edition Messner
Idea code 23218
€ 28.00

Flaneur's ninth edition focuses on the Boulevard Périphérique in Paris – choosing the former city wall and current city limits of Paris is intended to pose the question of how narratives of the peripheries could challenge centralist power and pave the way for a city of the future that reflects the reality of a multitude of communities rather than a normative majority. In an attempt to mirror this idea in its editorial approach, the editors have decentralized the making process for Issue 09 by inviting four curating editors (Alix Hugonnier, Annabelle Lacroix, Heryte Tefery Tequame and Justinien Tribillon) who, together with the team of Flaneur, conceptualized the issue in constant exchange and collaboration.

Slanted #41 - Amsterdam

Isbn 9783948440473
Publisher Slanted Publishers
Idea code 23253
€ 21.00

Color and form play an important role in Amsterdam’s design, which is egalitarian and serves the masses. Design is ubiquitous in Amsterdam, from the bike path to the police cars and even the city crest. The maze of canals and the upcoming neighborhoods are characterized by muted tones, dominated by black cobblestones, and dark brick. Behind the facades it rattles. The Dutch have always let it rip. The orange is more intense, the red more luminous, the black more brutal. Design is radical, it crashes, it vibrates. In its 41st issue, Slanted gathers a selection of Amsterdam’s most brilliant minds and provides deep insights into their work and values in the magazine and in the numerous video interviews. Illustrations, interviews, essays, and an extensive appendix with many useful tips and an overview with the best Dutch writings complete the issue thematically. Featuring Irma Boom, De Designpolitie, Novo Typo, fw:books, Hansje van Halem, Athenaeum Boekhandel and Karel Martens among many others.

cc-tapis an encounter with Charlotte Perriand (1972-2023)

Isbn 9789077745281
Publisher A Magazine
Idea code 23249
€ 39.00

By 1972, architect and designer Charlotte Perriand had dedicated a significant amount of her life to Les Arcs, a sprawling ski complex in the French Alps that would become one of her most ambitious projects. Six unpublished colour studies for a series of woven panels intended to brighten the alpine apartments, dated that same year, have laid untouched for 50 years in her Paris archives. Now they are brought to life by cc-tapis as a collection of handwoven carpets, presented in an exhibition celebrating Perriand’s unpublished archives and mastery of colour – testament to her lifelong passion for artisanal craft, from Japanese lacquer work to line block printing.

The Colour Journal – The Blue Issue

Isbn 9781838237707
Publisher Alep Publishing
Idea code 23197
€ 69.90

The Colour Journal is not simply another publication about the meaning of colour. Colours have not been approached in a literal way but as a starting point, a pretext to tell bigger stories, a means of revealing the story within the story: we all know Henri Matisse's Blue Nudes, but who can say the same about Biskra, the forgotten Algerian oasis that inspired him? We may also know about the ultramarine pigment that Yves Klein patented, but who has heard of Edouard Adam, a merchant in Montparnasse who discovered its formula? The Colour Journal intends to fight against the dictatorship of immediacy, to give depth to the pretty images of fashion magazines and Instagram feeds, to delve into familiar moments of art history and discover what lies beneath, to dig into museum libraries and reveal unseen treasures.

Girls Like Us #14 - Disappointment

Isbn
Publisher Girls Like Us
Idea code 23144
€ 10.20

The feeling of disappointment is not only close to regret, sadness, and dissatisfaction – a feeling of loss, an uncomfortable space (or a painful gap) between expectations and reality – we also understand it as a rattling in the rusty machinery of a society whose fuel is extraction and oppression. Considered an ‘ugly feeling’ by society’s norm, we’re not supposed to vocalize what and who is letting us down. We’re supposed to stay positive, get organized and act, instead of lingering in negative emotions. We’re supposed to be productive. But making space for disappointment can be a strategy of dissensus. Instead of wallowing in impotence, to make explicit what is not meeting expectations for this world can be an act of renouncing and making cracks in the status quo, while not giving up allegiance that another world is possible. Editorial team: Pelumi Adejumo, Persis Bekkering, Dagmar Bosma, Dora García, Jessica Gysel Sara Kaaman, Katja Mater & Yin Yin Wong.

Broken - Mending and Repair in a Throwaway World

Isbn 9789493039896
Publisher Ludion
Idea code 23267
€ 35.00

We live in a single-use society, where fashion is fast, disposability is the norm and it is easier to replace than to repair. We don't need to mend things anymore – and yet we do. What is it about Homo faber – man the maker – that cannot resist fixing what is broken? As we start to decouple from the linear take-make-waste model that has dominated Western economies since the Industrial Revolution and seek something more circular, an enquiry into what mending means has never been more urgent. With a foreword by The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades, this new book by craft and circularity advocate Katie Treggiden celebrates 25 artists, curators, menders and re-makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favour of the patina of use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Accompanying these profiles, six in-depth essays explore the societal, cultural and environmental roles of mending in a throwaway world.

Very charming animals: CATS

Isbn 9782940695119
Publisher Label Rapace
Idea code 23226
€ 40.25

Cat lovers, rejoice... or beware. This photographic series by the multifaceted Swiss artist Augustin Rebetez is a tribute, full of humour and witchcraft, honouring felines of all shapes and breeds. Skimmed from the internet, nonchalantly retouched using Photoshop, these images show silly, fantastical, even demonic creatures. Yet through this series Rebetez ultimately paints a mischievous portrait of our society, maliciously depicted in a truly bizarre collection of cats. In his vibrant exploration of a total art which in turn defies categorisation, Rebetez collaborates with numerous artists, punks, models, musicians, and friends in producing his surprising body of work.

Sheung Yiu – Everything is a Projection

Isbn 9789492051943
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 23256
€ 32.00

During the pandemic, Sheung Yiu started digitising everything on his desk at home, the inevitable confined space to which he was bound during lockdown. He created 3D models of scores of items and added texture details using a technique known as projective texturing. His physical desktop transformed into a 3D digital world. The process produced a dataset of digital objects that reflected his everyday life – intimate, yet strangely generic. The book explores one of many visual systems that form the basis of virtual reality and gaming, exposing the inner mechanisms of computer graphics that are shaping our world. With an interview with Jaakko Lehtinen, head researcher at NVIDIA.

Pokémon X Kogei - Playful Encounters of Pokémon and Japanese Craft

Isbn 9784808712686
Publisher Tokyo Bijutsu
Idea code 23251
€ 33.15

The catalogue for this exhibition at the National Crafts Museum in Kanazawa opens up a rich world of imagination, inspired by the fusion of pop culture and artisanship. Pokémon have been around since 1996, and traditional crafting techniques for centuries or even millennia. Yet there are many similarities between the two. The raw materials used in crafts and the energy used in the manufacturing process include earth, plants, metal, water, fire, electricity, and other elements analogous to the various Pokémon types. The latter’s systems for refining, cultivating, collecting, and exchanging also seem to overlap with the skills of the craftspeople who have created these astonishing objects.

White ManTM Identity Standards Manual by Oli Bentley

Isbn 9781916442726
Publisher Split
Idea code 23178
€ 11.30

'White ManTM' is an Identity Standards Manual produced by Leeds design studio Split. The manual, which takes on the form of a corporate brand guideline, offers a satirical exploration of the relationship between white and male identity and power. The simple, functional graphic forms that make up the manual's visual content are underscored by a deadpan narration. Dripping with corporate bullshit and beautiful utilitarian graphics, 'White ManTM' offers a snappy but thought-provoking exploration of just how deep the links between power and identity can run. Split founder Oli Bentley writes of the project "The format presents whiteness and maleness to be actively considered as identities, not the invisible 'default' against which so many are currently othered."

Flexible Visual Systems (4th ed)

Publisher Slanted Publishers
Idea code 23246
€ 48.00

Flexible Visual Systems is the design manual for contemporary visual identities. It teaches you a variety of approaches on how to design flexible systems, adjustable to any aesthetic or project in need of an identifiable visual language. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is a richly illustrated theoretic introduction explaining the past, present and future of flexible systems. The second part is a hands-on, almost purely visual, description of how to design flexible systems on form, starting with a circle, triangle, square, pentagon and hexagon. The third part explains how transformation processes can become flexible systems for visual identities. To learn how to design flexible systems is not just learning another craft, it is going to change the way you think and work entirely. It is an approach on how to design.

Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code
€ 17.05
