Nicolas Floc’h - Initium Maris
Isbn 9789464460421 Publisher Roma Publications Idea code 23445 € 45.00
Photographer Nicolas Floc’h dives into the coastal waters of Brittany with his camera, revealing the serene, surreal, and astonishingly organic underwater landscapes he finds there. Taken between 2015 and 2021, this series of photographs is framed by the notion of the sea as paradox: both the original place from where terrestrial life emerged and autonomous, a place that has continued to exist, assuming other forms and faces. Seas are places where the distinction between extension and space becomes irrelevant, but also where traditional metrics collapse, giving way to materiality in perpetual motion. A space for multiplying and diversifying forms of life on this planet.

Samuel James - Nightairs
Isbn 9789083285863 Publisher Fw: Books Idea code 23429 € 40.00
Many species of the beetle family Lampyridae, commonly known as fireflies, communicate with bioluminescent courtship displays. These flashing codes appear for a brief moment on warm nights in late spring and summer, at the very end of the insect’s life cycle. Samuel James watched their displays in Appalachian Ohio over four successive summers between 2019 and 2022. The flashes can vary in colour, pattern, and duration, and by habitat, hour of night, and time of season. Recorded with an exposure ranging from several seconds to an hour, a kind of score emerges from the glowing lights and dark pauses. ‘Nightairs’ presents a selection of these hauntingly beautiful images.

Carlos Alba I'll Bet the Devil My Head
Isbn 9786185479275 Publisher Void Idea code 23417 € 33.70
Londoners are famously divided in their adoration or disdain for foxes. Notably, the social tensions arising from Brexit mirror the bitter animosity between pro- and anti-fox factions. Some perceive urban foxes as a malign aberration. Yet the truth remains that, like humans, foxes adapt to their surroundings and thrive wherever circumstances permit. Carlos Alba’s visual tale metaphorically underlines the shared traits and experiences between humans and foxes, highlighting the disparities among inhabitants of different neighbourhoods in London. In this fable, foxes become the working class, ravens represent an aspect of social control, and the brokers are the elite.

Ruth van Beek - The Oldest Thing
Isbn 9789072532565 Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers Idea code 23454 € 55.00
In her work, which originates in her ever-growing archive, Ruth van Beek often uses the established visual codes of photography. The images, mainly from old books, become her tools, source material, and context. Van Beek physically intervenes in the pictures – folding, cutting, or adding pieces of painted paper – rearranging and manipulating the image long enough to reveal the universe that lies within. ‘The Oldest Thing’ features numerous collages, archival images, and paintings in a dazzling show of roughly 250 double spreads in which her mother’s cooking also plays a role. Seven poems by Van Beek’s long-time friend Basje Boer add nuance to the material.

Ken Kagami Selfie
Isbn 9781910239506 Publisher Hato Press Idea code 23286 € 34.00
From Homer Simpson to Snoopy, characters play a central role in Ken Kagami's drawing practice. Every morning when he arrives at his studio, the artist chooses from his collection of masks, costumes, and other props, creates a character and takes a phone selfie in his bathroom mirror - the result by turns surreal, strange, hilarious, and unnerving. A warm-up exercise of sorts, this process has become a key part of his daily routine, foregrounding all of his other artistic experiments. In 'SELFIE', his first ever photographic publication and his first book published by Hato Press, he shares 114 of the resulting self-portraits.

Dennis Morris – Colored Black
Isbn 9784908062520 Publisher Hehe Idea code 23470 € 40.80
Known for his iconic portraits of famous artists such as Bob Marley, the Sex Pistols, and Patti Smith, British photographer Dennis Morris began using cameras at a young age. This book is composed mainly of photographs taken in his teens, the start of a career spanning more than 50 years. The poverty and difficulties, the strength and pride of the community, and the coolness of the style all come into focus. From portraits in a simple studio to documenting sound system culture and depicting the civil rights movement, Morris presents a chronicle of Afro-British people in the 1960s and ’70s. This updated edition of a 2012 publication also includes newly coloured monochrome photographs.

Rieko Otake – Hanako
Isbn 9784907562397 Publisher Torch Press Idea code 23126 € 58.30
Rieko Otake uses wood from camphor, cypress, and katsura trees to produce her woodcarvings, leaving the finished piece untreated and with a natural surface. Her works often illustrate motifs such as young girls, birds, and animals, with dignified postures and expressionless yet profoundly penetrating gazes evoking a mysterious presence, as if they maintain an air of spirituality. ‘Hanako’ traces back to the beginnings of Otake’s practice, from her very first works in 2006 to brand-new pieces in 2022. Also featuring her initial foray into engraving, as yet unpublished drawings, and shots of her atelier showing glimpses of her working process, the book gives a portrait of her creativity.

Lesha Berezovskiy – We Stay
Isbn 9783906822471 Publisher Sturm & Drang Idea code 23420 € 53.80
Lesha Berezovskiy lives in Kyiv. He wakes up on February 24, 2022, and nothing is as it was: the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has begun. What does this do to the residents in the Ukrainian capital? What happens to people when their own fate is determined by world politics? In pictures and words, Berezovskiy records his thoughts. Unfiltered, direct, and honest, he tells of feeling overwhelmed at the beginning, the solidarity of the people on the ground, a cautiously hopeful summer, the everyday life in the fall, accompanied by the wailing of sirens, and the cold, dark winter under Russian attack. The images in the book look at the current situation and events from a very personal perspective. They’re touching, disturbing, poetic, and yet always very direct and true to life.

Thomas Hoepker - Italia
Isbn 9783981980578 Publisher Buchkunst Berlin Idea code 23427 € 47.05
Between 1956 and 1959, as a young man fresh out of high school, Thomas Hoepker travelled to Italy regularly to take photographs with a Leica MP camera. More than 10,000 negatives were produced during this period. In his pictures of Italy, Hoepker found a social perspective that would accompany and shape his work as a photojournalist throughout his life. His humanistic gaze and the cinematic composition of his images loosely aligns them with the neorealist cinema of the time, while at the same time focusing on people and their lives as part of social communities. ‘Italia’ brings together an extensive selection of these early-career photographs in one comprehensive volume.

Masahisa Fukase 1961-1991 Retrospective
Isbn 9784865411669 Publisher Akaaka Idea code 23435 € 29.90
Photographer Masahisa Fukase (1934–2012) carved out a unique place in the history of Japanese photography in the 1960s by focusing on his personal life. He pointed his camera at those in his immediate surroundings: his wife, Yoko, his extended family, his cat. Yet, while exposing his own life through a loving gaze and carefree sense of humour, he simultaneously set about exploring the madness deep within himself. Fukase’s career was tragically cut short when he suffered a fall in 1992, subsequently suffering severe memory impairment and aphasia. He never took another photograph. This retrospective collection offers an intimate tribute to his entire oeuvre.

Receiving high acclaim both within Japan and overseas, Yoshihiko Ueda has continued to present work on the frontline throughout his career of 40 years. Sebastián Bruno - Ta-ra
Isbn 9788409512928 Publisher Ediciones Anómalas Idea code 23442 € 40.85
In the working-class communities of South Wales, “ta-ra” is another way of saying goodbye. This sets the stage for Sebastián Bruno’s photographic series shot between 2013 and 2022 in towns and cities across South Wales, including Cardiff, Barry Island, Swansea, and Abertillery. Argentine by birth, Bruno spent several years in the United Kingdom completing his degrees in Documentary Photography at the University of South Wales. The black-and-white portraits of people and views of streets and buildings have a pure and unadorned quality about them. Some of his subjects return the camera’s gaze, while others seem aloof and distant, perhaps already somewhere else.

Víctor Santamarina - Foundations
Isbn 9789082771275 Publisher Building Fictions Idea code 23468 € 19.00
Foundations, documents an installation by Víctor Santamarina situated on the wetlands of the Eiland van Brienenoord, Rotterdam. Composed of a series of aluminium castings of leaks and liquid streams, the two sculptures are placed at the intertidal zone of the wetland. Appearing and disappearing as the tides come and go, the work takes part in the cyclical transformations that occur in this particular environment where the moon, water, human and non human beings constantly do and undo each other. Observing the work and its surrounding through a series of photographs captured with a pair of binoculars, the viewer is placed as an active character within what the author describes as a “negative island, a cavity rather than a peak, a round hole in the world, a sewer". The publication is accompanied by ‘Emergence/y’, a text contribution written by Felix Kalmenson.
