Anne Geene & Arjan De Nooy - Ornithology (new edition)
Isbn 9789083359694 Publisher Blind Finch Books Idea code 23559 € 37.50
Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy combine visual tools from the science of birds with the specific characteristics of photography, thereby imparting a fresh look at both. Through their pseudoscientific approach, Geene and De Nooy explore the boundaries between the two disciplines, adding a layer that is usually absent in the representation and science of birds: humour. Their classifications form comical results through creative and associative thinking, and yet they use the scientific method to also create an artistic microcosm that seems far removed from its strictly ornithological counterpart. The authors depart from the “classic” aesthetic of bird representation. This is a new, expanded edition of the eponymous title published in 2016.

Sanne Peper - Slowtime, Alabama
Isbn 9789083345925 Publisher Fw: Books Idea code 23551 € 40.00
Sanne Peper's project about the Deep South, a highly complex cultural region of the United States culminates in the publication of 'Slowtime, Alabama & The Beautiful Sadness', a fairytale-like exploration of good and evil, the human condition, an alt-right chipmunk who goes by the name of Jeremiah Day, and ultimately the fear of the Other. Photographs comprise half of the book, but Peper also writes about things she experienced and the tales people told her. She fabricates a very long short story in which fiction and non-fiction intertwine.

Erwin Wurm - Fifty-Nine Positions
Isbn 9782492175336 Publisher RVB Books Idea code 23565 € 30.10
Filmed in 1992 using a stationary camera, ‘59 Positions’ is a 20-minute video shot in an empty room. It shows fragments of actions, each lasting just a few seconds. The viewer glimpses Erwin Wurm and others dressed in nonsensical ways, creating forms that appear like contemporary sculptures. Their bodies are contorted into ridiculous poses, as if guided by a strange choreography. With the video, Wurm aimed to explore whether a physical action can become a sculpture and, if so, at what point that transition takes place. Fascinated by the outcome, he later decided to create the series of colour photographs presented in this book, reconnecting with the immediacy of this medium.

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky - Feeding on Light
Isbn 9789464460469 Publisher Roma Publications Idea code 23558 € 28.00
Imagine a collection of perforated leaves in which organisms like insects, fungi, or bacteria existing in the foliage have created an array of patterns. Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky’s ‘Feeding on Light’ examines photosynthesis through experimental photography. Bringing the outdoors into her analogue colour darkroom, the artist captures the traces of the often symbiotic relationships observed between trees, insects, and the sun. The book takes the form of a field guide, with an extensive index of common and scientific plant names linking the hundreds of photograms, contact prints, and negative prints. Essays contextualise her work through biology, ecology, and philosophy.

Hiske Altena – Vital Mud
Isbn 9789492051974 Publisher The Eriskay Connection Idea code 23562 € 35.00
With ‘Vital Mud’, Dutch artist Hiske Altena explores the theory that life on Earth once began in clay. In the 1980s, her uncle, now a retired geologist, found an unusual stone that rattled. Within this stone, he discovered organic-looking structures which he could not easily explain using existing geological theories. The so-called “clay hypothesis”, however, seemed to offer a better explanation. This is the basis on which Altena builds a collection of images intended to shift our perspective, prompting a re-examination of the evolution of early life forms and the capabilities of humans themselves. In the process, she reminds us that science is a continuous search for the unknown.

Hans Wilschut — Beirut, Epi-Centre Ville
Isbn 9789083285894 Publisher Fw: Books Idea code 23531 € 35.00
‘Beirut, Epi-Centre Ville’ recalls the aftershock of the explosion that hit Beirut in 2020. The disaster killed 218 people and injured thousands. The devastation was enormous, destroying many homes. Lebanon’s government subsequently fell, causing political instability. The ensuing economic and administrative crisis is still ongoing. Although the blast gradually disappeared from the news, it continued to feel extremely close for Hans Wilschut. This book is his attempt to make tangible the paralysis that remained in the city. He has approached Beirut from all sides, portraying not the city itself but rather vantage points that show it falling apart. With an essay by Dominique Eddé.

Laure Tiberghien
Isbn 9782492175312 Publisher RVB Books Idea code 23566 € 40.85
The first monograph on visual artist Laure Tiberghien, who lives and works in Paris. Covering ten years of work, the book reflects the artist’s interest in the visual and plastic aspects of photography as she explores the inventive potential of the medium. Produced through a combination of chemistry, light, and time, Tiberghien’s abstract prints emerge from a masterful approach to composition and colour. The surface, in this case the type of paper selected for a specific print, also plays a crucial role in producing the desired result. The book’s design, by SP Millot, arrays the text of an essay by Erik Verhagen in a way that punctuates the images, just as the images propel the text.

Barbara Diener - The Rocket’s Red Glare
Isbn 9789083285887 Publisher Fw: Books Idea code 23507 € 43.75
‘The Rocket’s Red Glare’ uses the life of instrumental German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun to explore the selective way history is told. The series of historical documents, archival and contemporary images, and manipulated photographs challenges the often dual retelling of significant events, starting in Nazi Germany and culminating in the Moon landing. Barbara Diener’s interest comes from her own reckoning with history and her complicated German heritage surrounding World War II. Rather than present a complete view, she leaves intentional holes in the narratives, seeing how stories pass through generations and how facts are distorted, embellished, or undermined.

Bob Colacello | David Jiménez - New York Memories
Isbn 9788412279290 Publisher Ivorypress Idea code 23502 € 36.15
‘New York Memories’ is the first collaboration between American writer Bob Colacello and Spanish photographer David Jiménez. The book expresses Colacello’s vision as a native New Yorker who has intensely experienced the city and how it has adapted to different circumstances over the past decades. His text is complemented by atemporal photographic impressions by Jiménez – black-and-white images combining street scenes, views of architecture in the city, and specific ambiences and situations. Concrete and more poetic shots together form a visually compelling journey in which we lose track of time and place. This is the fourth instalment of the Ivorypress Cities collection.

Joanna Szproch - Alltagsfantasie
Isbn 9782492696152 Publisher Andre Frere Editions Idea code 23567 € 48.40
Alltagsfantasie (Everyday Fantasy) by Joanna Szproch is an ode to sexual autonomy and celebrates female sensuality. It is an illustrated photo-text performance - a multilayered self-portrait - in which the artist invites us to reconsider notions of identity, gender roles, and self-portrayal. It sharpens our view of the individual and societal search for self-empowerment and opens up space for a critical examination of existing power structures and norms.

Stephen Cornford – Petrified Media
Isbn 9789492051998 Publisher The Eriskay Connection Idea code 23535 € 24.00
Inspired by the Anthropocene, media artist Stephen Cornford speculates on the deep future of electronic waste as it sediments into Earth’s stratigraphic record. By applying geological techniques to a hypothetical “technofossil”, he seeks to materialise an inevitable scenario where discarded technologies become part of the planet’s geology. Colourful microscope imagery combines with analyses of elementary composition and details on the origin of the indispensable metals used in the production of today’s technological devices. Essays by Siobhan Angus, Jan Zalasiewicz, and Cornford himself reflect on the topic from the authors’ respective theoretical backgrounds.

Vincent Zanni - Sights of Unary
Isbn 9789083213231 Publisher House Publishing Idea code 23383 € 46.20
Sights of Unary by Swiss photographer Vincent Zanni investigates the meaning and function of family photos as a tool to preserve memories and hand down identity and experiences down to future generations. In the book over 400 photos are compiled, all part of a very extensive family photographic archive, collected and kept by Vincents’ late grand mother. The archive depicts the lives of a Swiss family and contains 2000+ images, some dating back to the very beginning of commercial photography in the late 1800’s. The unusual interventions and choice of paper for Sights of Unary, including a hand printed cyanotype cover, result in a very unique display of photographs; creating new and distorted compositions with underlaying images that mimic the nature of our own memory, where memories are fluid and the past will never be as clear it was once experienced.

Daido Moriyama: Record 54
Isbn Publisher Akio Nagasawa Idea code 23299 € 27.65
While his wife and daughter went shopping in Kamiōoka, a town just to the south of Yokohama, Daido Moriyama spent some time doing what he does best: walking around the area surrounding the station, crowded with people and tall buildings, with his camera in hand. The activity inevitably led him to a spot he always visits, a place he refers to as “oasis number three”: a 50-metre stretch of narrow alley between the back of a store and the railway line, where a number of outdoor ashtrays draw congregations of smokers like himself. There he enjoys spending some time having a cigarette while observing the neighbourhood and of course also taking the occasional snapshot.

‘How Do You Short Circuit Control (East wing, left lobe and middle of the road) is a new artist book by Lee Nevo that includes over four hundred photographs taken by Lee with her mobile, during four years spent between four countries – France, Germany, Belgium and Israel. The images are from everywhere – bringing together daily habits, screenshots, text messages, friends and lovers, as well as fragments from her artistic practice, discreetly embedded amongst other references, impressions, fascinations and obsessions. Each page was personally set and curated by the artist, creating a daring visual journey which rethinks our relationship both with the grid, and with control itself, carving out an ambiguous space that lies where life and art meet, perpetually in limbo.

Cesare Bossi - The Shift Of Technologies, from dye transfer to Piezography
Isbn 9788870385915 Publisher Centro Di Idea code 23487 € 20.45
Over more than four decades of work, Cesare Bossi has always seen printing as an integral and undeniable part of the photographic process. A print is the point of connection between what the artist has seen and interpreted and what they want to produce. Through years of experimentation with different techniques and the interaction of those techniques with various papers and their surfaces, Bossi has made this fundamental passage an art form. This book recounts a story which speaks of a very unique technical, artistic, and human journey. The recollections and examples he provides here constitute information to understand an important period in the evolution of photography.

Eye Ohashi - Sewing Box
Isbn 9784908062544 Publisher Hehe Idea code 23428 € 69.95
Eye Ohashi’s 'Sewing Box' was originally inspired by her mother’s sewing box, who is a sewing-lover. After taking photos of her mother’s sewing box, she continued to photograph different people’s sewing boxes. From sturdy sewing boxes that must have been passed down from generation to generation, to casual containers such as confectionery tins, simple plastic toolboxes, rattan baskets, cloth bags, and Ziploc bags — sewing box may be a small, everyday item, but the way the box is chosen, the type of tools used, and the way it is organized and stored all reflect the personality and style of the owner. These sewing boxes that have been used over the years give off a certain charm and remind us of the warmth that comes from human connection, making this photo collection strangely calming.
