The title refers to a celebrated photography project by the American artist Robert Adams entitled ‘Summer Nights, Walking’, which was made in the city of Denver, Colorado. While the project could be seen as a nod to Adams, Panar’s intention is to create something specifically about Pittsburgh, in which he highlights the unique qualities of the recent winter seasons in this region, with an eye towards the changing climate and the dark winters of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wandering the city alone at night, Panar invites us to consider the familiar space of the city in its uncanny delight, with a heightened sense of stillness and quiet all around, as if the world itself has been placed on mute.

At his workspace in the centre of Amsterdam, when the afternoon sun is just right, Thomas Manneke captures still lifes and portraits of his daughter, Laurie, using an 8x10 inch plate camera. Most photographs in this book were made in collaboration with his daughter. The objects in the book are made especially to photograph them. Sometimes they are inspired by found objects, like a small grey stone with whimsical white lines or by a web created by caterpillars. Some objects were inspired by artworks from the past like the drawings on glass were by Josef Albers and the folded sculptures of thick paper, or dynamic cut-outs of cardboard were inspired by photographs of Francis Bruguiere. The book shows the fun of creating things together while getting inspired by the world around us.

The images appearing in “Always Dream”, a photobook by Yoshihiko Ueda, were all shot in China between 1990 and 2011, while Ueda worked on several advertising campaigns for an oolong tea made by Japanese beverage giant Suntory. In the fall of 1952, Cy Twombly receives a traveling scholarship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and leaves New York for his first trip to Europe and North Africa. He meets up with Robert Rauschenberg in Casablanca, and the two of them travel to Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains, and then to Tangier. They pay a visit to Paul Bowles in Tétouan and go on day trips with him to nearby villages and Roman ruins. Twombly conducts his first and last archaeological excavation there. Upon their return to Rome in February 1953, Twombly studies and sketches the ethnographic objects and tribal artifacts he sees on display in the Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini. These sketches survive in the form of the North African Sketchbooks. Much of the surviving work from this trip consists of photographs taken with a Rolleiflex shared by the artists and sketches made by them, preserved in the archives of the Cy Twombly Foundation and Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio; they provide a unique perspective on Twombly's lesser-known affinity for Africa's Mediterranean shores.

The impulse behind this experimental photo project was to inject methodology from street photography – mostly, the reliance on serendipity and spontaneous behaviour – into architectural photography. Inspired by Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine’s films, Philippe Sarfati wanted to show buildings through the eyes of their users, by presenting spaces as inhabited territories. Acclaimed works of architecture thus become dramatic backdrops to everyday scenes, their radical geometries framing simple acts. The book plays with the notion of contextual portraiture. On the one hand, architecture is used as a frame, by focusing compositions onto subjects through bold volumes and strong lines. On the other hand, people give meaning and scale to the spaces shown. Their attitudes heighten our perception of the building atmospheres. Philippe Sarfati (b. 1992) is a French architect and photographer based in Paris.

Akiyoshi Taniguchi – On Representational Emptiness

Akiyoshi Taniguchi is farsighted, so he decided to remove his glasses and immerse himself in a blurry world to take pictures. Using manual focus, it was impossible for him to tell if the shot was in focus. Reflected on his retina was scenery that only he could see, so he tried pressing the shutter while relying on his own five senses. Looking at the finished prints later on, he felt there was “something reminiscent” of that reflection on the retina. But while that is the fact captured by the photograph, the question of what was taken is a futile one. Such floating substances are understood in Buddhist philosophy as Impermanence. In other words, permanent substances do not exist at all.
