Aesthetics Imperfections - How AI is Changing The Landscape of Typography

Isbn 9783948440541
Publisher Slanted Publishers
Idea code 23820
€ 45.00

Creativity and innovation are no longer exclusively the province of humans, but the result of collaboration, a game of interpretation in the dialogue between humans and machines. This is the world in which we live today, where artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving and new scenarios are opened. Is AI technology revolutionising the fields of art, design, communication, and marketing, but as regards typography? This research brought Gianpaolo Tucci to discover aesthetic imperfections as a value of uniqueness for each individual representation. This is not a book on typography, but the expression of a point of view, a practical guide, and an investigation on how the integration and ethical use of artificial intelligence will play a fundamental role in modelling this future.

MacGuffin 13: The Letter

Isbn 24058203
Publisher Macguffin
Idea code 23744
€ 23.00

‘The Letter’ does not relate to the alphabet alone but to language, to code, to gestures, to media, and more. The letter is a magical symbol, and at the same time a very ordinary thing. It is embedded in specific culture and dependent on the reproduction technologies available at the time. The context is what makes it interesting: the letter is created, used, discarded, forgotten, and (sometimes) revived. Find out about the history of Scrabble, embracing graffiti, how humans perform letters, the culture of protest letters, the meaning of memes, typography that resists the domination of Western typefaces, the narrow binarity of the French language, the left-handed experience, and more.

Idea code 23819

"What happens when a plain T-shirt is worn? What kind of hyper-awareness is produced in the wearer? How are the sensory organs roused and poised to ensure that no foreign substances of any form shall stain the pristine white fabric of the plain T-shirt? While some will find this super-sensitivity brought on by a humble piece of clothing refreshing, others consider it unnecessary paranoia and would rather not wear plain, light-coloured T-shirts at all. Those who do have probably come to terms with the fact that with great plain-ness, comes great responsibility..."

Dirty Furniture 6/6: Bed

Isbn 9780993351150
Publisher Dirty Furniture
Idea code 23823
€ 19.60

Conceived as a finite printed series of six, each issue of Dirty Furniture takes a piece of furniture as its theme and uses it as a springboard to explore topics spanning politics, design, history, technology, psychology, manufacturing, art, and the plain weird. In this final issue, 'Bed', the magazine rips off the covers to reveal how the bed, sleep – or the lack of it – shapes our lives. The authors sleep with sleep-monitoring devices, reflect on the beds they were born in and consider the screen’s capacity to alleviate insomnia. They wonder how the duvet became a wardrobe staple, talk to sheep and study the architecture of dreams. The Bed issue has contributions by Oli Stratford, Formafantasma, Charles Holland, Philippa Snow, Pillow Culture, Catharine Rossi, Miguel Arjona, Anne Galloway, and many others.

Massimo Gardone with Alessandra Muran has produced a volume that is many things: a living and vivid herbarium of nature's colors with elements collected and photographed while still fresh, but also an evocative photo book capable of enhancing with the eye of the graphic artist the colors and "pantone" of petals, leaves, branches and other elements of nature. The texts accompanying this research are an essay by Francesco Messina and reflections by landscape designer Matteo Lacivita who starts from the naturalistic observation of colors to also talk about painting, music and other art forms that color really cannot do without.

Arabic typography exists in a universe of extremes: considered by some as holy but more often painfully neglected, mysterious and elusive but also an unmistakable cultural icon. It is based on the world’s richest calligraphic traditions. Today, it is less of a technological challenge for type designers using the proper font editor. This publication is in a very simple way extreme in its own right. It is the second and last publication of its kind. It is a must have for everyone working with Arabic type or interested in the typography of extremes. The goal of this publication is to give adequate help in selecting Arabic fonts for use in print and other media. An abundance of information about Arabic type can be found online these days. What is missing is a directory, or visual catalogue for high quality type. This book aims to provide such a directory.

Isbn 9789490939281
Publisher Khatt Books
Idea code 23845
€ 41.35

Nagy Shaker (1932–2018) was an Egyptian design pioneer born in the suburbs of Cairo. He is one of the most influential figures in the history of modern Egyptian design. He is also considered the godfather of modern Egyptian puppetry since he introduced the art of puppetry to Egypt, and his name will forever be connected to this art form. He designed and directed several seminal performances for the Egyptian Puppet Theater Company. Its most famed is El-Leila el-Kebira (The Grand Night, 1960). He enriched Egyptian theater and film with outstanding sets and costume designs. He also worked in editorial design in Cairo in Dar El-Hilal and many others, until he set up his own multidisciplinary design studio in 1980 and carried out various graphic design projects for UNICEF and for cinema and publishing houses. His graphic design solutions instigated a shift in cinema poster design and introduced a modernist approach to editorial design. Through his teaching and mentorship, he influenced a younger generation of Egyptian designers who are practicing today. This has contributed to the development of graphic and three- dimensional design in Egypt and, indirectly, the Arab region. In addition to being a comprehensive presentation of Nagy Shaker’s various design projects, this books presents an intimate insight into his personality, process and life story, retold in his won words through interviews interspersed through the book.

Mouneer Al-Shaarani is a prolific and highly acclaimed Syrian calligrapher and designer. He was born on September 6, 1952, in Salamiya, Syria. He began his calligraphic apprenticeship at a young age, with Syrian master calligrapher Muhammad Badawi Al-Dirani (1894–1967). After 1967, and in parallel with his studies, he practiced calligraphy as sign-painter and created lettering for billboard advertising and other design commissions. He was part of the first graduating class from the Graphic Design program at the Faculty of Fine Arts (Kulliyat al-Funūn) in Damascus University, studying under eminent design pioneer Abdelkader Arnaout (1936–1992), graduating in 1977. Puppets and the Avantgarde

Isbn 9791254930762
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 23830
€ 56.85

When a puppet breaks the "fourth wall"- that is, the capacity for emotional involvement of a successful performance - it wins the trust of the audience, giving the show the power to blur the division between stage and world, between art and life. Understanding this were those artists, leading figures in the world of Art and Figure Theater, who looked to "creative play" as a source of aesthetic inspiration to seek new modes of visual expression. This volume and the accompanying exhibition Puppets and the Avantgarde. Picasso - Depero - Klee - Sarzi, curated by James M. Bradburne - from November 2023 at the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia - open up a space for the imagination by tracing the cultural and social role of puppets in the European avant garde at the beginning of the 20th century. An itinerary that places alongside the great names of Pablo Picasso, Fortunato Depero and Paul Klee, that of Otello Sarzi, a poetic figure who marked the artistic and educational history of Reggio Emilia. In order to understand their appeal, puppets are examined in the broadest sense: puppets operated from above – common in the palaces of princes and the drawing rooms of the bourgeoisie; and puppets manipulated from below – inhabitants of the popular world of fairs and the public square.

Rattle, an inventory of forms

Isbn 9782919459124
Publisher Editions Piqpoq
Idea code 23786
€ 31.20

The rattle is often the first toy a child is given, because it stimulates their five senses and helps in their development. Its role as a toy that promotes early learning is essential, but it also acts as a “transitional” object, reassuring the baby when separated from their mother. Inspired by new theories of child development, 20th-century designers such as Kay Bojesen, Patrick Rylands, and Antonio Vitali made revolutionary changes to this familiar object. Drawing on a unique collection, this book presents a rigorous selection of dozens of imaginative creations from this period, with materials ranging from different kinds of natural wood to the smooth, brightly coloured surfaces of plastic.

The Pasta Workshops

Isbn 9791254930526
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 23829
€ 27.80

The Pasta Workshops is the brainchild of Christian Holstad and Sissi Daniela Oliveri. Starting from the similarity between modeling clay and kneading fresh pasta, they initiated a workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna (where Sissi teaches the Performing Techniques for the Visual Arts course) with the intention of giving students an experience that would encourage them to explore new approaches and modes of expression that do not conform to traditional techniques. Thus, instead of clay and ceramics, pasta, a raw sculptural material with which to develop new edible art forms, was used. The workshop, extended over three academic years (2020-2022), was also part of the riparAzioni - Re-elaborate to art project, designed by the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna for the PON METRO program, coordinated by the City of Bologna and funded by the European Union.
