Kitty Crowther - Face the Day
Isbn 9782902565542 Publisher Fotokino Idea code 23817 € 25.80
A renowned author and illustrator, Kitty Crowther often expresses herself through books that have become classics on children’s bookshelves. Her work has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Prize in 2010. But for some years now, she has been giving her work more freedom, developing it outside books, through exhibitions and collaborations. In 2021, during the second confinement period, she embarked on a series that was not originally intended for publication. No doubt in response to the need to faces and question the human form, she drew dozens of heads which, two years later, made up a body of almost 150 drawings. The book Face the Day contains around a hundred of these drawings, along with a selection of monotypes created during a residency at the RLD studios in 2022.

ABC - History and Form of the Latin Script
Isbn 9783038630838 Publisher Triest Verlag Idea code 24018 € 28.10
ABC – History and Form of the Latin Script provides an overview of the development of the Latin script. It covers the origin of Latin characters and how they were changed and altered over the centuries and cumulates in a presentation of contemporary digital scripts and fonts. Based on Hans Eduard Meier’s (1923–2015) standard work The Development of Script and Type (first published in 1959), the editors have completely revised the book, supplementing and expanding it with state-of-the-art scientific findings. In his original work, Meier described the development of the Latin script, from Phoenician inscriptions and Greek lapidarian writing to the most important printed texts of the early 20th century. The authors supplemented Meier’s original work with a genealogy of all the fonts presented, including their font genres, as well as important 20th and early 21st century milestones that were previously absent.

Lous Martens – Animal Books for Jaap, Zeno, Anna, Julian & Luca (new edition)
Isbn 9789464460551 Publisher Roma Publications Idea code 24008 € 35.00
Lous Martens has five grandchildren – Jaap, Zeno, Anna, Julian, and Luca – and has begun making an animal scrapbook for each newcomer to the family. Although it is seventeen years since the first, Jaap, was born, none of the five books are finished yet. Consisting of loosely pasted pictures of animals that were clipped from newspapers and magazines about art, literature, and science, plus stamps and photographs from advertising brochures, the books are enjoyable for their small, ever-evolving changes as new material is added. Interestingly, the books were never intended to be published, but are now grouped into one big volume, an embodiment of familial love and dedication.

Richard McGuire Popeye and Olive
Isbn 9782902565566 Publisher Fotokino Idea code 23844 € 17.20
Richard McGuire is an artist with a thousand facets. Leader of a New York post-punk band in the early 1980s, Liquid Liquid, at the same time he covered lower Manhattan with stencilled posters. He then embarked on a career as an illustrator, notably working for The New Yorker, before signing a number of children’s books that were to leave their mark on the children’s publishing scene in the 1990s. Popeye and Olive was born out of an exercise in meditation through painting that Richard McGuire undertook a few years ago. By tirelessly repeating shapes on paper, with no intention other than the gesture itself, the silhouette of Popeye emerged one day. From there, McGuire decided to use E. C. Segar’s character ad infinitum, while bringing him back to his essence (muscle, a pipe and a cap), and then to do the same with Olive Oyl.

Tender Digitality
Isbn 9783948440695 Publisher Slanted Publishers Idea code 24023 € 26.00
Tender Digitality introduces an aesthetically oriented concept that intricately intertwines binary systems in a complex manner, setting them in motion. The concept responds to the human desire for sensuality, interpersonal connection, intuition, and well-being in digital environments. It explores ways to (re)transmit these experiences into the analog world of a book, developing its own distinct vocabularies. Readers are guided through the various perspectives of this kaleidoscope, encouraging them to delve into different play-forms of "tender digitality" and develop their own approach. Assuming the role of researchers, they discover phenomena of extraordinary beauty or bizarreness within the spectrum spanning analogue and digital, social, and technological domains.

To Hold Your Heart in Your Teeth: The Visual Language of the Romanian Blouse
Isbn 9789083350165 Publisher Set Margins' Idea code 24032 € 24.00
“To Hold Your Heart in Your Teeth” is a Romanian proverb which means to brave forward despite fear. Made by generations of women, the folk garment of the Romanian blouse secured its language through times of fierce changes. This book is a cultural-historical biography of the blouse, from Neolithic beginnings in northeastern Romania and western Ukraine, through the period of folk revival, the communist era, and the post-communist immigration out of the region. Weaving personal narrative with this historical research, Simona Bortis-Schultz, author and designer of this book, is a New York based child of this immigration. Moving bravely forward despite fear “To Take Your Heart in Your Teeth” is an homage as it stands in solidarity with the generations of women in resilience, writing out the design qualities of this feminine fortitude, and the charm of the garment they made to survive.

Free the Map - From Atlas to Hermes: a New Cartography of Borders and Migration
Isbn 9789462088122 Publisher Nai010 Publishers Idea code 24035 € 34.95
A map is a visual story of the world. It feeds our imagination and shapes our view of the world. A standard atlas, however, predominantly tells only one story, that of the nation-state. It depicts a world in which people are uniformly packed into national containers, enclosed by borders, and in which migration is is often represented as threatening arrows of invasion. 'Free the Map' goes beyond this narrow, state-centric cartography. The book argues for a new cartographic story: a Hermes – the grandson of Atlas and the god of mobility and human connections. To this end, it discusses several visually compelling, alternative cartographic representations of borders and migration.

Bruno Munari - El artista / The artist
Isbn 9791254930755 Publisher Corraini Edizioni Idea code 24054 € 48.00
For some time now, the multi-faceted figure of Bruno Munari has been known and appreciated beyond the confines of the countries he chose —Italy, Japan, Switzerland, the United States— on account of his personal and intellectual attitude of “traversing” different linguistic territories. As a designer, artist, pedagogue, graphic designer, Munari is renowned for having helped to foster the permeability of the frontiers between artistic languages which during Modernism were regarded as academically separate. Now, after years of exhaustive research into his personality and his highly versatile work, the challenge could be to go against the tide and dive even deeper, considering each and every one of the disciplines to which Munari turned his hand. This entire volume —published on the occasion of the exhibition held by the MACA Museum of Manantiales (Uruguay) under the curatorship of Marco Meneguzzo, one of the foremost experts on Munari— is dedicated to his activity as an artist. Not only are his achievements in the fields of futurism, concrete art, kinetic art and conceptual art —spanning more than sixty years—, covered, they are also compared to the historic context in which they unfolded and to his highly personal idea of “project”.

Lytle Shaw - The Mollino Set
Isbn 9783906213484 Publisher Rollo Press & Cabinet Books Idea code 24011 € 18.00
New York-based professor Lytle Shaw journeys to Italy in this adventurous exploration of the life and work of architect, designer, and photographer Carlo Mollino (1905–1973). In 1933 the young Mollino received a commission from Mussolini’s regime for his first building: an administrative centre in Piedmont. Later works include furniture and interior design, a book on photography, and an asymmetrical car that raced at Le Mans in 1955. The book centres around Shaw’s realisation that this prolific talent’s conflicted legacy offers a unique window on the role that post-war Italian politics and culture played in the country’s reimagining of itself as a victim, rather than a proponent, of fascism.

Longing for Lo-fi – Glimpsing back through technology
Isbn 9789493148970 Publisher Onomatopee Idea code 23886 € 18.00
In the here and today there are many attempts to recreate spaces of comfort. The lo-fi community should be considered one of them. Through the numerous nostalgic references and relaxing beats of lo-fi, we retrieve a glimpse of what was once our home—be it real or imaginary. Not to state that we all take a trip down memory lane while listening to lo-fi, not at all actually. When we look at the live chat that accompanies these streams, we are often confronted with people talking about their workload. Those discussing an upcoming deadline are often met with encouraging and supportive comments that they can do it, they can go that extra mile. One might say that Longing for Lo-fi equals longing for the homely. This book-length essay looks at internet culture through the lens of psychoanalysis, semiotics and critical theory, in an attempt to lay the feeling of comfort bare.
