Tools #04 – To Cut

Isbn 9782957876938
Publisher Tools Magazine
Idea code 24608
€ 26.90

Tools magazine is the brainchild of Clémentine Berry, who also founded the Twice art direction studio in Paris. This annual publication aims to simultaneously promote and investigate the details of manufacturing techniques and expertise used in art, design, interior architecture, industry and trade. Each issue focuses on a particular technique (moulding, folding, etc.), and the theme is used to select feature subjects and pieces, as well as the persons interviewed. Tools is crafted as a comprehensive inventory of design techniques. Weaving together past and present, it draws on history to illustrate how techniques have been handed down through the ages, paying homage to the creators behind the cult objects we use in our everyday lives, and whose work embodies the stories that lie at the very genesis of our shared human ingenuity.

MacGuffin 14: The Wall

Isbn 24058203
Publisher Macguffin
Idea code 24531
€ 23.00

From the Apartheid wall in Palestine to the digital paywall, from memorial murals in Jamaica to the increasingly tall glass facades of modern office blocks, walls testify to the tumult of history and humanity’s ceaseless urge to communicate and to sow division. They force us to reflect on the paradoxes of openness and isolation, of enclosure and exclusion. In a world drowning in borders, barriers and barbed-wire fences, this issue of MacGuffin pauses for thought and asks: What exactly do we want to express or protect? And why?

Science of the Secondary 15: Floor

Isbn 9789811896088
Publisher Atelier Hoko
Idea code 24363
€ 19.00

Very few things in our everyday thrive by doing absolutely nothing. The floor might just be a rare exception; devoid of any vitality or ambition—characteristics at odds with a society obsessed with progress—it remains unapologetically passive. Yet, despite its unyielding commitment to inertia, the floor remains largely ignored and relegated to the background. One would think that its sheer size alone, comparable to that of the lesser tamed ground that we trample upon outdoors, ought to make it a subject of wide interest. As the only building element that we physically contact with the most, our expectations of the floor are disappointingly pragmatic; it should not shake, give way, or tilt. Mostly, it should be flat as we all know of those amongst us, who descend into melodramatic despair each time they encounter an uneven floor, though the rationale behind such obsession with flat-ness is beyond us here. ‘Science of the Secondary: Floor’ is the fifteenth edition in the series of ongoing research conceived and developed by Atelier HOKO.

Publisher MacGuffin
Idea code 24640

Coinciding with ‘MacGuffin 13: The Letter’, the magazine collaborated with Archief Cairo, a collective based in Egypt, to organise a temporary design studio in November 2023. This week-long event brought together a diverse group of young image-makers, designers, and writers from the region. With the ethos of ‘MacGuffin’ in mind, the Arab world was considered through the theme of the letter, investigating the use and reuse of vernacular typography in the Middle East. Roughly fifteen designers and thinkers participated in a series of field trips and lectures, culminating in a workshop co-organised with Archief Cairo. This publication showcases the results of the workshop.

Purple 42: The Magic Issue

Isbn 17668832
Publisher Purple Institute
Idea code 24586
€ 41.60

Today, our societies are facing the failure of rationalism and progressivism; things are breaking down, despite our having the human, scientific, financial, and even political means to advance towards a better future, both individual and collective. Could magic be a way to re-enchant the world? Perhaps it can offer an alternative for those who seek other techniques and knowledge to evolve personally, reassure themselves, regain confidence, and engage their creative consciousness in a different way and rediscover the world’s beauty. ‘Purple’ delves into the archaic, multifaceted realm of magic, where each subject, series, text, and interview explores a magical door, key, or formula.

Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures of Memory

Isbn 9784861529467
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 24563
€ 36.15

This is the official catalogue for the career-spanning retrospective exhibition of Japanese pop artist Keiichi Tanaami (1936–2024), held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. His brain-melting, protean oeuvre spans not only fine art but also illustration, graphic design, and video. Fuelled by psychedelic forms, comic books, electric colours, and Hollywood films, the decidedly reactionary practice he developed since the 1960s has since led to worldwide acclaim. A self-described “image director”, Tanaami was also inspired by Any Warhol’s multidisciplinary approach and became fascinated with the potential of printed matter as an artistic medium capable of duplication and proliferation.

Publisher Neutral Colors
Idea code 24512

The fifth issue of ‘Neutral Colors’ takes on “language” as its theme. Language, the editors claim, is a notion that cannot be communicated. In pursuit of a modern-day Rosetta Stone, the magazine is fully designed to express the essence of language through visual imagery and concepts. From tracing traditional Indonesian scripts, onomatopoeia, and the Japanese dance theatre known as butoh, to cephalopods and seeking a father’s language, this issue’s contents are as varied as the appearance of the magazine’s pages. ‘Neutral Colors’ is an independent Japanese publication featuring vibrant offset and Risograph printing combined with a saddle-stitched binding.

Hong Shu-ying 尘惦 (chéndiàn) - after scans and lingering dust

Isbn 9789811895838
Publisher Temporary Press
Idea code 24576
€ 28.40

Watching dust settle symbolizes time passing. Each hand-copied notation in this collection is a memory imprinted by different people, read and re-read, adding new layers of meaning. Repeated copying, reading, and sharing gradually erodes the original marks, much like how time wears things down to dust. The book features 43 images from 127 hand-copied Chinese music scores, processed through scanning, enlarging, color inversion, and Risograph printing. Artist Hong Shu-ying recontextualizes found images and materials to explore patterns and contradictions in learning and inheritance. The book is top-bound with two pieces of stiff board backing that allows it to stand like a calendar, where the book can be ‘read’ very slowly over a year.

Farah Al Qasimi – Patterns

Isbn 9782493467072
Publisher Note Note Éditions
Idea code 24639
€ 35.75

Farah Al Qasimi takes us into her kaleidoscopic world, where, beyond their beauty and softness, the patterns and objects she captures embody contradictions. For her, they talk about who we are, our context and our way of relating. We sometimes see how something designed for beauty can be completely weathered or used in an unintended way. That failure – eventual andunavoidable imperfection – feels like a human characteristic to the artist. She confesses she has empathy for objects, almost granting them souls. Sensitive to ideas of longevity andoverconsumption, she observes their travels between cultures and how they are reimagined depending on the environment. Dating back to childhood and her love for a particular Persian rug, motifs are key for Farah Al Qasimi, who sees them as windows into universes of their own.

The Arzhang Sketchbook

Isbn
Publisher Nazar Publishing
Idea code 24573
€ 16.50

‘Arzhang’ is the name of a book of illustrations by the Iranian prophet Mani (ca. 216–274). Known as a painter and the founder of Manichaeism, Mani produced illustrations to spread his teachings to disciples. Despite gaining a tremendous following, today there are very few records left in Mesopotamia or Egypt, the two main regions where Manichaeism first emerged, of an artistic tradition associated with the religion. Surviving paintings are miniatures and murals created between the 9th and 12th centuries, found in western China. Inspired by these works, Iranian artist Nikzad Nojoumi created his own Manichean interpretations, which are featured on the pages of this notebook.

Science of the Secondary 16: Book

Isbn
Publisher Atelier Hoko
Idea code 24606
€ 19.60

“These days, there is a lot of confusion and discussion about different reading formats. They often weary us with their variations, cramming functions and features we do not need and doing it clumsily when all we really want, is a simple book that is well-sized and easy to flip. Despite this, many people seamlessly transition from physical books to electronic devices and are seemingly unaffected even though between the two mediums lies differences that are discreet, restrained and subtle that one must know how to perceive. But it seems we have already learned not to question it…". ‘Science of the Secondary: Book’ is the 16th edition in the series of ongoing research conceived and developed by Atelier HOKO.

Cookie Mueller - Fan Mail, Frank Letters, and Crank Calls

Isbn 9798989378081
Publisher Hanuman Editions
Idea code 24543
€ 15.10

Following the publication of Cookie Mueller’s Garden of Ashes in Hanuman's first series, this is the reissue her first contribution to the Hanuman canon: Fan Mail, Frank Letters, and Crank Calls, an epistolary portrait of the absurdity of human connection. Her book also doubles as a shrine to channels of analogue communication between private and public personas that have since metastasized in our climate of microcelebrity ideation. Sexy and hilarious, Mueller’s text embraces the discomfiting nature of desire with empathy and trademark wit. Cookie Mueller (1949–1989) was an American writer, actress, and advice columnist, best remembered as a regular cast member of some of the director John Waters's groundbreaking films, including Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Desperate Living. She died from AIDS-related complications in 1989.
