Barragán by Souto de Moura & Juan Rodríguez

Isbn 9788412659177
Publisher C2C Editorial
Idea code 24844
€ 30.65

A black-and-white photographic journey through the work of Mexican engineer and architect Luis Barragán (1902–1988), who was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1980. Barragán’s approach emphasised the importance of native culture and its intersection with elegant modernist design. His lasting influence can be seen in the work of many of Mexico’s contemporary architects. Despite the colourless photographs, the book still manages to introduce Barragán’s hues in an abstract way in its cover and binding. It also includes a text by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, where he justifies the importance of the spatial aspect of Barragán’s work over his remarkable use of colour.

The Images of Luis Barragán

Isbn 9789464460711
Publisher Roma Publications
Idea code 24681
€ 24.30

This book presents a selection of the images collected by Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902–1988) as part of a reference archive that he displayed on a lectern in the living room of his home. In an ever-changing arrangement of pictures, Barragán’s thinking was made visual. Because it was a personal archive from which the architect simply added or removed images over time, the 170 currently registered pictures are all that can provide us today with a kaleidoscopic insight into Barragán’s mind, itself a myriad network of personal relationships, professional influences, and formal obsessions. The publication is the manifestation of a project by Roger Willems and Mark Manders.

Publisher The Danish Architectural Press
Idea code 24819
€ 41.80

Universal design offers a paradigm shift in how we understand and perceive human beings and the diversity of abilities within architecture and urban planning. The concept introduces a new approach to core aspects of architecture: sensory experiences, social sustainability, and architectural qualities and meaning. In 'Universal Design - On Enabling and Empowering a Diverse Population', Camilla Ryhl engages in dialogue with ten architects about their practices and understanding of universal design. The book introduces a model for applying universal design at three differing levels, providing a practical framework for creating inclusive and accessible spaces. It is an essential read for architects, designers, and anyone interested in creating spaces that harmonize with the varied abilities and experiences of all individuals.

Against an Architecture of Neoliberal Technocracy: Lessons from (the Dissolution of) the Architecture of the Welfare State in Britain

Isbn 9788090843363
Publisher Vi Per Gallery
Idea code 24607
€ 25.55

As another history of the present, 'Against an Architecture of Neoliberal Technocracy: Lessons from (the Dissolution of) the Architecture of the Welfare State in Britain' problematises the contemporary disappearance of the architectures of social welfare. It addresses the dismantling of the welfare state in Britain and the transition to a state of neoliberal technocracy. The book argues that it was through the proliferation of specific technocratic operations in the production of the built environment that these changes became possible and the deployment of neoliberal forms of governance were facilitated as actions at a distance that direct our behaviours. It aims to be a critique, and a call, to re-define the role of architecture as a mechanism of social governance where the use value of architecture is prioritised against its subjective exchange value.

Owned by Others: A Map to Possession Island

Isbn 9783947858392
Publisher K. Verlag
Idea code 24843
€ 36.55

'Owned by Others: A Map to Possession Island' treads the interstices of the institutionally mummified city center that is Museum Island in Berlin. An embodied interrogation of colonial looting and nationalist chauvinism, this book maps alternative orientations for decolonization, restitution, repair, and empowering movement. OBO also considers how the alleged “revitalization” of the museologized city center continues to exploit the lived experiences of diasporic artists and looks to other practices of inhabitation and transformation to challenge these legacies of oppression.

MONU 37: Conflict-Driven Urbanism

Isbn 9783986120986
Publisher Board Publishers
Idea code 24719
€ 23.10

Urbanism is inherently conflict-driven, as Eve Blau points out in an interview in this issue of ‘MONU’. According to her, because cities are places of power, representation, and contestation, processes of urbanisation involve a certain amount of violence and destruction, which is both positive and negative. Various authors and perspectives go on to explore this notion in depth. Topics range from the Syrian refugee crisis, where people reshape their places and identities while navigating the complex structures of belonging, to sprawl and emptiness as a chief tool of protection in Australian capital cities and how the youth of Kyiv are returning to life as usual the Ukrainian capital.

a+u 649 24:10 adamo-faiden Selective Memory

Isbn
Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha
Idea code 24670
€ 23.90

This issue highlights the work of adama-faiden, founded in Buenos Aires in 2005 by Sebastián Adamo and Marcelo Faiden. Nearly two decades of work is traced through 34 projects in chronological order. From small residential projects in their early years, the studio has transitioned into an increasingly diverse practice, including a high-rise in central Buenos Aires and social housing in Europe. Regardless of scale, what remains consistent in their work is a considered approach to urban environments and a sensitivity to airflow. Their designs often feature permeable facades and cohabitating plants, creating a soft, fluid connection between interior and exterior.

5 Architecture Fables

Isbn 9788412878004
Publisher Altrim Publishers
Idea code 24811
€ 30.10

Why are fables so appealing to children and adults alike? For the child, it can be a refuge in the imagination; for the adult, an escape from the mundane. Fables intentionally expand the imagination of children as they distort time and space, as well as logic, scale, and proportion. Which are things architects sometimes do unintentionally. ‘Five Architecture Fables’ takes a long and serious look at the discipline of architecture, in the process seeking to subvert the status quo by exploring the possibilities for change. The fables address aspects that span the entire discipline – architectural practice, education, conservation and building, and the future – for the child in us all.

PALADS

Isbn 9788797381137
Publisher Marrow Press
Idea code 24793
€ 32.25

With its vibrant facade, the Palads has been a feature of Copenhagen’s cityscape since the work was unveiled in September 1989. Palads is one of the most famous works by Poul Gernes (1925–1996), as well as one of the most discussed public artworks in Denmark. This book, rather than offering a conventional art historical review, is an experiment in art communication. Three artistic contributions activate the decoration, in line with Gernes’s belief that art should not be a static, museum-bound object, but a communal matter that energises people upon encountering it. Texts by Anders Kold, Kristian Vistrup Madsen, and Natalie Körner shed light on the work’s relevance today.

Negotiating Ungers 3

Isbn 9780988290655
Publisher Common Books
Idea code 24782
€ 18.00

In 1972, German architect Oswald Mathias Ungers and his students at Cornell University developed a prototype for a Self-Help Housing System (S-HHS). Around the same time, Ungers and his wife Liselotte published a study titled Communes in the New World 1740–1972, examining utopian communities in the U.S. Ungers’ 1972 architectural approach fused typological research, modern urban planning, and utopianism in a novel way. The S-HHS concept aimed to integrate community-driven initiatives with broader political, social, and economic frameworks. Together, the projects highlighted alternative forms of communal organization and emphasized the dynamic, collaborative nature of architectural production. This third publication, initiated through a 2021 summer school at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, explores systematic and inventive architectural strategies through essays, interviews, and artistic research.

Graduation Catalogue 2024 Design Academy Eindhoven

Isbn 9789491400513
Publisher Design Academy Eindhoven
Idea code 24763
€ 34.00

The understanding of design as an expressive medium is not static; it is constantly transforming, shaped by the broader world around it. Design emerges not in isolation but from the lived experiences of its creators, influenced by their interactions and reflecting the dreams and fears of the time. In this graduation catalogue, this evolving notion of design is also profoundly shaped by the character and passions of each student, not to mention by their encounters with peers, tutors, and department heads, and the physical spaces of their training. The latter become a crucible where tradition and new ideas meet, creating a blend of continuity and change.

Ferréol Babin - Enigmatic Refractions

Isbn 9788822922946
Publisher Quodlibet
Idea code 24727
€ 19.35

Consciously functional but also emotionally poetic, the objects Ferréol Babin creates are ambivalent, an original typological category between the archaic artefact and the ultra-contemporary product. They seek an intersection and a balance between controlling the material’s transformation and the need to allow the material itself to suggest its own modification. Produced as one-offs or small series and marked by refined purity of form, they are experiments inspired by craftsmanship. The French designer seems to set out to discover – or perhaps conserve – a deeply human dimension and a relationship of essential connection with nature, its materials, and its life cycles.

Designerly ways of knowing: a working inventory of things a designer should know

Isbn 9789083449883
Publisher Set Margins'
Idea code 24837
€ 11.55

Design thinking has created divisions in the discipline: either designers are too theory driven or simply practitioners. Those feeling lost can easily turn to a language meant to inspire creative production in easy to pitch ways. Led by Antonio Gramsci’s advice that knowing thyself requires compiling an inventory, design critic, educator, and researcher Danah Abdulla pays tribute to the late architect, activist, and critic Michael Sorkin, whose original list 'Two Hundred and Fifty Things an Architect Should Know' inspired this updated version targeted at designers. The iterative list is not meant to be a definitive how to guide, but to spark conversations, to prompt critical thinking and to help designers reconfigure their discipline.
