Identity - The Story of Czech Graphic Design

Isbn 9788076375451
Publisher Paseka/Mowshe
Idea code 250091
€ 73.55

Explore over a century of Czech graphic design and typography in this volume edited by design theorist Linda Kudrnovská, which serves as a contemporary record of the exploration of a cultural community living in this politically, socially, and visually turbulent region of Central Europe. The book examines the field of graphic design and typography through the prism of today’s understanding of quality, yet does not aspire to be a universal arbiter of taste, nor attempt to define an ideal connection between visual form and content. Chapters on public space, the everyday, nationhood and propaganda, media, book culture, and beyond borders shape its comprehensive exploration.

Na Kim - Portrait

Isbn 9788998143855
Publisher Propaganda
Idea code 24657
€ 57.60

An extension of the ongoing SET project, this ambitious publication, Portrait, proposes an accommodating container — one capable of holding matters of accumulation, testing out new methods of making, revealing past processes, and introducing serendipity and co-authorship into the evolving narrative that is Na Kim’s practice. The publication follows a familiar trajectory in the footsteps of SET’s logic, mapping real-world scale and perspective onto the printed page. There are more than three hundred printed pages — blank slates, inviting canvases — for an experimental dialogue between archival elements, the present moment, and unknown outcomes.

Impact Type. Manufacturing Type for Type-writers in Switzerland, 1941–1997

Isbn 9783038630883
Publisher Triest Verlag
Idea code 250090
€ 29.15

Three Swiss companies manufactured type for typewriters between the 1940s and 1990s: Caractères SA, Setag, and Novatype. For over fifty years, they supplied leading office machine manufacturers in Europe and around the world, including Remington, IBM, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermes, and Triumph-Adler. These three companies, which held a major position on the world market, were instrumental in the creation, development and manufacture of type components and typefaces for typewriters, and indeed for impact printers in general. This volume, with its detailed portraits of the three companies, explores the history behind these typefaces and the historical context in which they were produced. When all three factories closed in the 1990s, most of their archives were destroyed. As a result, this research quickly turned into a very detailed investigation aiming to document this period of history by means of primary sources.

Designing History - Documents and the Design Imperative to Immutability

Isbn 9789083404103
Publisher Set Margins'
Idea code 250117
€ 23.00

Moving beyond the usual genres of form in graphic design’s canonical history, ‘Designing History’ proposes a model centred on bureaucratic instruments of identity, ownership, value, and permission: money, passports, certificates, property deeds, etc. It considers the implications of a design history of the document, where the designer shifts from being a practitioner of conventional design histories to become subject and agency of bureaucratic authority. The book is a revised edition of ‘Immutable: Designing History’ (2022) and includes an extended essay that contextualizes the project as a remapping of graphic design’s historical, pedagogical, and practical assumptions.

Isbn 17668832
Publisher Purple Institute
Idea code 250088
€ 52.00

For over 30 years, ‘Purple’ magazine has maintained a significant presence in Tokyo, yet it has never dedicated an entire issue to Japan. This 43rd edition serves as an ode to Japan, spotlighting its contemporary culture as a powerful source of radical inspiration in the modern world. The issue shuns all forms of Japonism, as well as any touristic or nostalgic fascination. Rather, it presents an avant-garde, innovative, and decidedly topical perspective on Japan and its far-reaching influence. Get ready for a wild ride through the Japanese metropolis, with contributions from Coco Capitán, Takashi Homma, Olivier Zahm, Ryoko Sekiguchi, Daido Moriyama, Juergen Teller, and many more.

I Thought It Was Love, But It Was Just A Barbecue

Isbn 9789526528649
Publisher Other Editions
Idea code 250081
€ 25.00

This book explores the unexpected beauty of everyday objects temporarily covered in the urban landscape. From bikes to cars, barbecues to patio furniture, and even plants, these covered objects are often along our paths, yet we’re never quite sure what’s hidden underneath. Blending humor with insight, the book dives into the mystery of the unseen, drawing parallels between the objects we pass by daily and the complexities of human perception. It invites readers to question how much of what we “see” is shaped by our experiences, imagination, and the stories we tell ourselves. With reflections on perception, life, and everything in between, it celebrates ambiguity and the rich possibilities that come from embracing the unknown. After all, isn’t it the hidden and uncertain that keep us curious and engaged with the world around us?

Design History Reader - an emerging vision for a new narrative

Isbn 9789493382084
Publisher Onomatopee
Idea code 250058
€ 24.00

'Design History Reader' contains a pluralistic approach to teaching and narrating graphic design history by presenting one that actually reflects the diversity in the profession and in the classroom. This book also grapples with the paradox that while historians intentionally craft historical discourse based on collective knowledge, it often remains bound to a singular perspective. Those perspectives multiplied when Boston University History of Graphic Design students embraced a plural design history pedagogy. Students challenged the Western design history canon through written research that targets under-known designers and design movements who they believe deserve representation. The project includes a comprehensive collection of essays that were curated across a range of perspectives and conceptual ecosystems.

Isbn 9783968490922
Publisher Favoriten Presse
Idea code 250068

In the past, cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen set the standard for cycling culture. Today, however, the love of bicycles is impossible to miss in other European metropolises. Cyclists navigate these urban landscapes in colorful, diverse, and creative ways, with their choice of bike often reflecting who they are—or aspire to be. Berlin-based illustrator Jakob Hinrichs, a proud rider of an old Dutch bike, has observed this phenomenon closely. With his distinctive style, he has created a typology of cyclists that delights the eye, appealing to more than just two-wheel enthusiasts. From the trash cyclist to the speed queen and the beige brigade from the countryside, Modern Cyclists showcases the characters rolling through the city.
