Rick van der Klooster – Between the Mountain and the River

Isbn 9789083451077
Publisher Fw: Books
Idea code 250241
€ 36.45

Throughout his childhood, Rick van der Klooster spent school holidays in the Alps with his mother. It was only when she became terminally ill in 2013 that he realised how special the landscape had become for them both. There, his mother could continue to live in his thoughts. The fear of going back and really losing her kept him from setting foot near her mountains for a long while. For years, he visited his mother’s guesthouse only in his dreams. They talked about being dead, how the world moves on, and how to deal with that. In 2018, he returned to the mountains of his youth. ‘Between the Mountain and the River' is a photography project focusing on grief, transience, and nature.

Mashid Mohadjerin - Riding in Silence & the Crying Dervish

Isbn 9789090395838
Publisher Mashid Mohadjerin
Idea code 250250
€ 59.00

An intricate tapestry of personal and collective memory, Mashid Mohadjerin’s work interweaves photography, text, video, and archival material to explore displacement, resistance, and identity. She reconstructs the past not as a distant realm but as something tangible, living within language, inherited trauma, and memory. In ‘Riding in Silence & The Crying Dervish’, the tension between imposed identity and self-definition is key to the artist’s exploration of masculinity and how it is shaped by war, colonialism, nationalism, and religious ideology. Through the lens of her father’s memories, Mohadjerin reveals how even the simplest actions become acts of quiet defiance.

In this richly illustrated volume, fascinating case studies ranging from extinct aurochs to sci-fi meteorites and Indiana Jones's Golden Idol, Paans reveals how archetypal forms continue to shape contemporary visual culture. His multimedia approach combines photography, video, 3D renders, and sculpture to examine humanity's evolving relationship with ecology, offering profound insights into the fluid nature of time and space.

This time, Van Hoek focuses on the typography around Broadway, the vibrant thoroughfare that divides the city in east and west, and that has seen countless transformations over the years. She teams up with local writer and historian Norman M. Klein, who, on the basis of (noir) films, literature, and personal memory, wrote an essay about the erasure of memory in the neighbourhood.

Publisher Fw: Books

From simple gestures to profound life lessons, every interaction with his parents and their parents contributes to the person Scheeren has become today. With this series of photographs, he explores who his grandmother was, but also who his grandfather was. While gaining insight into their characters, Scheeren is better able to see who he is or wants to be, so the cherished cycle of connection and warmth will continue.

Ilse Oosterkamp – Fingers

Isbn 9789072532619
Publisher Van Zoetendaal Publishers
Idea code 250141
€ 35.95

With his hands, Ilse Oosterkamp’s son Melle creates something that no one else can imitate. Melle has multiple disabilities, and struggles with a condition that makes his joints extremely flexible: hypermobility. Without him being aware of it, he can effortlessly create fleeting sculptures with his fingers. Lasting a few seconds, these poses cannot be controlled. As a photographer, Oosterkamp is fascinated by the impossibilities and unsuspected possibilities of the body – beautiful forms, but not always a pretty picture. Today’s visual culture is eager to showcase perfection. Being different evokes discomfort, because people are not accustomed to it. She strives to reveal the beauty.

James Tunks – ZONE

Isbn 9781922545374
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 250139
€ 34.70

In ‘ZONE’, James Tunks plays at the peripheries of new and old knowledge. An anonymous text sets its protagonist in a kind of fever dream. Alone, abroad, and in possession of a secret camera prototype of unimaginable image-making power, he considers the implications and sheer scope of the device’s advancements. Using flashes of colour as a foil for meticulously detailed black and white, the subjects and their underlying symbolism whisper to both the past and present of the technological, explorative, concealed, and classified. Image-making teeters between the ability to capture microscopic detail and the capability to cause disruption on a mass scale.

Ju Young Kim – Air Conditioned Hours

Isbn 9783689170080
Publisher Edition Taube
Idea code 250198
€ 20.45

The new artist book features photographs by Ju Young Kim that capture her personal perspective as a transcontinental traveller. They document both the peculiar and the exceptional moments during hours of travel between different time zones - such as the standardised meals, the views of cloudscapes, sunrises, and runways through the small, round windows. In this way, Kim offers a unique yet universally recognisable expression of states of transition and transit zones. The photographs are accompanied by collaborative short stories by Guilherme Vilhena Martins and the artist. Through an exchange of journal entries - based on thoughts and conversations during flights, personal travel routines, and observations of other passengers - Vilhena Martins has assembled the passages into a travelogue.

Alejandro Cartagena - A Guide to Infrastructure and Corruption

Isbn 9781908889539
Publisher The Velvet Cell
Idea code 250049
€ 28.00

Mexican photographer Alejandro Cartagena documents the impact of Monterrey's rapid infrastructure development through a six-year investigation that began in 2009. Following the construction of an overpass near his home, Cartagena examines how these projects reshape urban life and benefit private interests rather than local communities. His photographs trace how new highway systems, built to serve expanding suburbs, transform downtown neighbourhoods. Through town meetings and urban planning conferences, he reveals the complex relationships between public space, political power, and private development in contemporary Mexico.

Amador Lorenzo – Nacenza

Isbn 9788412426069
Publisher Fabulatorio
Idea code 250147
€ 40.85

Through the lens of a rural veterinarian's daily rounds, Amador Lorenzo's book “Nacenza” presents a striking documentary perspective of Spain's Queixa-Manzaneda Central Massif in Galicia. Begun in 2014, this intimate portrait eschews romanticised views of rural life in favour of raw authenticity. Lorenzo's photographs capture the profound interconnectedness of humans, animals and landscape, where life and death play out against the backdrop of vast wilderness and sheltered domesticity. The result is a visual narrative that dissolves conventional hierarchies and avoids the nostalgic approaches often used when portraying rural life.

Yuhki Touyama – Scenes of Absence

Isbn 9784865411881
Publisher Akaaka
Idea code 250172
€ 37.10

‘Scenes of Absence’ begins with the inevitable death of Yuhki Touyama’s grandmother, whom she moves in with to care for her in her final months. There is not much she can do besides keep the house clean, spend time with her, and make sure meals taste good. None of this, however, is reflected in these photographs. Instead, we see snapshots of trees and sidewalks, other people’s gardens and flowerpots, a beautiful shadow pattern on a grey wall, and various trivial sights and scenes Touyama encountered as she walked around the neighbourhood. Each of her snapshots, each small detail that caught her eye, no matter how insignificant, seems to glow with appreciation.

How do human history, myths, and lives shape and change the character and culture of a region? Japanese photographer Seido Kino captures scenes from around the town of Okuizumo, in Japan’s southern Shimane Prefecture, this series of stunning images. Not unlike many rural areas in Japan, the town’s population is declining. In his beautiful and meditative images, Kino focuses on both the physical (rich and varied nature, buildings, human-made structures) and the social and intersubjective layers of the local landscape. From the macro to the micro, his lens captures the fleeting details of seasonal changes, age-old traditions, and the gradual but inevitable passage of time.
