Julie Wolfe - Apophenia volume 02: Exquisite Corpse

Isbn 9798987569511
Publisher Apophenia Press
Idea code 250546
€ 70.00

Julie Wolfe’s world is a strange technicolour dreamscape where time, place, and authorship blur. Ordinary moments gain glamour, while impressive images turn eerie. The artist scans, paints, and reprints archival images, transforming them into futuristic collages and altered visuals that question beauty, value, and meaning. By recontextualising what was once deemed worth preserving, she revives and reframes it, exploring new associations and defamiliarizing the familiar to shift our perceptions. This is the second volume in her series of artist’s books, which function as extensions of her studio practice, bridging the tactile and conceptual, the personal and the collective.

Exhibiting for Multiple Senses

Isbn 9789493246485
Publisher Valiz
Idea code 250681
€ 24.30

Drawing from neuroscience research on diverse sensory experiences among neurodiverse museum visitors, this study explores how contemporary art exhibitions can extend beyond visual primacy to engage all the senses. Exhibitions can incorporate more touch, smell, taste, and movement, challenging traditional display methods while advocating for dynamic and accessible ways of experiencing art. It explores creating more inclusive museum experiences for people with physical, neurological, or mental support needs – an often-overlooked group within the growing debate on diversity and inclusion in the arts.

Privilege – Yvonne Rainer Filmography

Isbn 9788785336033
Publisher At Last Books
Idea code 250420
€ 27.55

Yvonne Rainer (b. 1934) needs no introduction. One of the great American artists of her generation, she revolutionised dance and choreography in the 1960s. Yet over the course of two decades - from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s - Rainer also directed seven feature films, each intensely discursive and consistently inviting critical reflection. Radically diverse and impossible to categorise, her films carve out their own space between documentary, fiction, performance, and the avant-garde. For decades, these films have been difficult to access, and when shown, they were often confined to small monitors in large museum settings. Now, newly restored in 4K, they were presented in a retrospective by Terrassen in 2024 - the first of its kind in Denmark. The retrospective culminated in the publication of a new Yvonne Rainer filmography, with contributions from Babette Mangolte, Ursula Andkjær Olsen, Mira Adoumier, Emily Wardill, Emily LaBarge, Amelia Groom, Valérie Massadian, Iman Mohammed, Frida Sandström and Yvonne Rainer herself.

Fiona Tan – Monomania

Isbn 9789462089075
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 250621
€ 24.30

Fiona Tan takes ‘Portrait of a Kleptomaniac’ (ca. 1822) by Théodore Géricault (1791–1824) as the starting point in a quest to discover the origins of 19th-century psychiatry. The portrait belongs to the “monomanias” series, which Géricault painted at the request of a psychiatrist who believed that mental disorders were visible in the faces of patients. Tan, fascinated by the mutability of identity and representation, explores what was understood by monomania and depictions of mental illness. Guided by the shifting boundary between what is considered normal and abnormal, her selection of works from the Rijksmuseum’s collection is insightful, inspirational, and wonderful.

Ron Dirven – The Infinite Tree

Isbn 9789493363229
Publisher The Eriskay Connection
Idea code 250676
€ 38.90

For more than 16 years on his free Mondays, Ron Dirven (NL) studied twigs, roots, trunks, blossoms, leaves, more trunks, and trees. Endless trees. He did not often go out into nature, as you would expect from someone so focussed on it, but used his studio to wander among the trees and try to fathom them. He improvises and searches for his own soul and identity in his paintings, but only through trees. They stand firm and strong and move their leaves flexibly in the wind. The metaphorical power of nature is evident in his work: the tree as a metaphor for life.

A Garden of Flowers

Isbn 9783910298323
Publisher Strzelecki Books
Idea code 250591
€ 26.60

This exhibition catalogue documents a dialogue between two exceptional talents: contemporary glass artist Lilla Tabasso draws inspiration from the botanical work ‘Hortus Floridus’ (1614) by Dutch engraver Crispijn de Passe the Younger (1594–1670) and creates a garden full of glass flowers. Tabasso translates De Passe’s detailed copperplate engravings into hyper-realistic, vibrant sculptural flowers made of Murano glass, illuminating the artistic bridge between nature, biology, and attention to detail. Two essays and an interview with the artist explain the background and connections behind the works, inviting readers to reconsider and better understand floral aesthetics.

Rooted and Branched

Isbn 9783910298316
Publisher Strzelecki Books
Idea code 250592
€ 33.25

Roots anchor trees in the soil and supply vital nutrients, forming underground networks through which plants communicate. We humans, too, are rooted in many ways – socially, culturally, ecologically – an analogy at the heart of ‘Rooted and Branched’. The exhibition catalogue presents six artistic positions that explore questions of belonging, interconnectedness, and the interweaving of humans and the world. The works by artists such as Olga Grotova, Krištof Kintera, Jenny Michel, and Diana Scherer address family roots, complex ramifications in knowledge systems, and interactions between natural and cultural processes, but also the individual’s place within these structures.

Camila Oliveira Fairclough - Paint Everyday

Isbn 9782494983342
Publisher Éditions B42
Idea code 250685
€ 30.10

Painting is everywhere: in an advertising logo, printed on the pages of a magazine, between the serifs of a typeface, in a signature or in a fabric pattern... At least, that is how artist Camila Oliveira Fairclough sees it. She has made the status of the subject in painting and the recurrence of motifs a central theme of her work. The Brazilian artist finds inspiration in everyday life: by reappropriating some patterns such as animal figures, signatures, children’s names, or quotes spoken by a yoga teacher, Fairclough shifts the subject to transform it into a concrete and malleable form. Words, letters, and signs thus become graphic elements and shapes, just like geometric forms and colors in a composition. Her works, whether painted or printed, refer to the history of abstraction, ready-made art, Brazilian concrete and visual poetry, as well as Pop Art. This first monograph presents a wide range of pieces created between 2014 and 2024. These are accompanied by two texts that highlight her work, written by art and graphic design historian Victor Guégan and independent curator Jill Gasparina.

Maurits de Bruijn – Private View

Isbn 9789493329478
Publisher Jap Sam Books
Idea code 250615
€ 34.00

‘Private View’ reveals a world that never seemed intended for other people’s eyes. Paper sculptures, cardboard models, garments, portraits, textile works, and photo collages are piled high within the walls of an apartment, a tangle of artistry contained in 45 square metres. At the centre is artist Cees de Rooij, whose way of living – where nothing is discarded and everything is marked by the love of making and remaking – is also a way to create without an audience. Through encounters, documentation, and conversations, this book examines not only the boundaries of what it means to be an artist but also queerness, visibility, care, and the transience of things and memories.

Publisher Thoth
Idea code 250600

The core of the Van Gogh Museum’s collection consists of the paintings, drawings, prints, and letters of Vincent van Gogh, as well as a group of artworks by his contemporaries, which Vincent assembled with his brother Theo. Following Theo’s tragic death, six months after that of Vincent, his widow Jo van Gogh-Bonger devoted her life to raising awareness of this legacy. To keep the collection intact, Theo and Jo’s son – named Vincent after his uncle – set out to have a museum built, that opened its doors in 1973. 'Choosing Vincent' looks back over a tale of doubt, setbacks, and triumph, while highlighting many of the masterpieces and lesser-known gems from this unique collection.

Cybernetic Serendipity – The Computer and the Arts

Isbn 9781948764001
Publisher Studio International
Idea code 250664
€ 29.15

In July 1968, a special issue of Studio International was published, 'Cybernetic Serendipity: The Computer and the Arts', which was realised in relation to the Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition held at London's Institute of Contemporary Art from August to October of the same year. The show drew attention to the inventive ways that artists, scientists, and technology experts were working together to make computer-generated graphics, animations, and music, as well as cybernetic machines and environments. The idea was that artistic forms could be, and were, spawned by technology. The exhibition was curated by Jasia Reichardt, in collaboration with Mark Dowson (technological adviser) and Peter Schmidt (musical adviser) and designed by Franciszka Themerson.

Julika Rudelius … in the days of the bullies

Isbn 9783910298262

Julika Rudelius uses video to address issues she encounters. Through staged scenarios, she interweaves cinéma vérité, video installation, and pop cultural phenomena at the fringes of history. Her practice looks at power and gender, with a focus on the interpersonal relations and vulnerabilities that arise in a human need for belonging during late capitalism. Appearing with a survey exhibition of video works spanning over two decades, in which the selection highlights the unique character of a feminist art practice that defies easy categorisation, this publication asks whether truth is only possible through the telling, and revealing, of fictions – of lies we tell each other and ourselves.

Sudah_ On heritage, art, cooking, and family

Isbn 9789493329416
Publisher Jap Sam Books
Idea code 250577
€ 38.85

‘Sudah’ evolved out of an exploration of Moluccan roots. Jessica Voorwinde discovered how little was actually known about her family’s story of migration, even within the family itself. The project focuses on her mother and aunts, who migrated with their parents from Dutch New Guinea to the Netherlands in 1960. While it is an attempt to preserve her family’s stories and recipes for future generations, it is equally intended to uncover a chapter of Dutch history that is virtually unknown to many. Voorwinde explores cooking as memory, silence as survival, and what gets lost when stories are never passed on – an affectionate invitation to listen, to recognise, and to hold on to things we value.

Peti Wiskemann, Simon Trüb - Work Flow

Isbn 9783907262665
Publisher Edition Clandestin
Idea code 250566
€ 51.05

Compiled in this book are scribbles that Peti Wiskemann created and collected between 1989 and the present. Comprising approximately 350 drawings, the selection includes drawn notes, to-do lists, and improvised sketches. None were ever intended as finished works; they are all byproducts of ongoing work processes. Texts consisting of just two words form a second layer throughout. This improvisational arrangement creates new word pictures – at once associative and dissociative – that seem like a mixture of Bushido’s “Sonnenbank Flavour” and Dadaist poems by Hugo Ball (1886–1927). Taken altogether, the publication forms a microcosm of the Swiss artist’s oeuvre.

Corinne Odermatt - Longing to Belong

Isbn 9783907262542
Publisher Edition Clandestin
Idea code 250567
€ 51.05

The longing to belong is a prevalent theme in the multilayered and often ambiguous visual worlds of artist Corinne Odermatt. Her body of work spans diverse areas of design, where high and low, trash and art, life and spectacle collide without distinction. Published in conjunction with Odermatt’s installation ‘Longing to Belong’, both the artwork and this book address how society deals with questions of identity, especially in a globalised, conflict-ridden world. Flags representing imaginary nations (“imaginations”) form the centre of the installation. The coincidence of being born in a particular place invites reflection on the ongoing process of connecting and separating communities.

Idea code 250639

‘NOW: A Universe in Chapters’ is a first overview of works produced by artist Sandra Capaul over the past two decades. The works she developed in this period, through continuous experimentation with very different materials and situations, include photographs, drawings, objects, videos, and installations. In these, the Zurich-based artist defines experimental arrangements that often give her specific research projects an installation-like framework and provide the starting point for serial groups of works. The changeability of forms from different perspectives and rotation, in particular, frequently play a decisive role in Capaul’s oeuvre. “I create subtle, quiet spaces, spaces of perception.”
