Housing Loops - Opulence, Precarity, Dignity, Prosperity And Fraternity

Isbn 9788409714353
Publisher A+t Architecture Publishers
Idea code 250842
€ 39.30

This research by a+t research group proposes an alternative reading of the history of housing. Rather than being organised around architectural styles or movements, it is structured through five essential conditions that define the lived experience of inhabitation: Opulence, Precarity, Dignity, Prosperity, and Fraternity. Drawing on 178 case studies—ranging from the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-eighteenth century to the second decade of the twenty-first—this critical chronology maps the evolution of collective housing in relation to the social demands of each historical period. The timeline identifies key patterns in housing design, recurring spatial loops that transcend eras, advances in construction technologies, and the transformation of the domestic unit as a nucleus of cohabitation.

Planning and Designing Cities for a Rising Sea Level

Isbn 9788774075806
Publisher The Danish Architectural Press
Idea code 250838
€ 52.25

With a changing climate, sea levels are expected to rise at an increasing rate over the next centuries, jeopardising populations living in smaller or larger urban communities along the coastlines. The extent and speed of this process is uncertain, which puts coastal cities in the difficult position of deciding which urban planning and design responses are adequate. Also, the complexity and extended time-frame of this wicked problem calls for multidisciplinary and open-minded approaches, where knowledge, practice, and visions for the future all contribute to robust, evidence-based, and locally attuned adaption. This book tackles the challenge of sea level rise and how cities can respond.

... but who are we building for?

Isbn 9788774071099
Publisher The Danish Architectural Press
Idea code 250816
€ 43.90

Architecture has historically functioned as both shelter and a tool for power that can establish dominance and exclusion, often failing to accommodate diverse needs and ways of being. In this second publication from Building Diversity, architectural establishments and norms are challenged. The editors examine who buildings and environments are designed for and with, emphasizing collaboration that includes diverse perspectives across human, multi-species, ecosystem, and climate needs. Rather than presenting a unified narrative, the book acknowledges contradictions and multiple entry points into the question “who are we building for?,” aiming to amplify marginalised voices, emerging from a global open call for contributions, and foster agency in making the built environment more inclusive and equitable.

Megalopolis

Isbn 9788774075752
Publisher The Danish Architectural Press
Idea code 250728
€ 43.90

Urbanisation is one of the most decisive - yet often overlooked - global challenges of our time. While only 10% of the world’s population lived in cities in 1900, that figure is now nearly two-thirds. This rapid shift has reshaped how we live. 'Megalopolis' explores the future of cities and the crucial role they play in addressing global problems. Cities can drive positive change - but uncontrolled growth risks leading us down a ‘sure road to hell’. To solve the challenges ahead, we must solve them in our cities. Now available in English, this translation brings Peter Butenschøn’s insightful journey through urban futures to a wider audience. A Norwegian architect, landscape architect, and critic, Butenschøn has long been a prominent voice in architectural discourse.

It’s About Time: Perspectives on Scandinavian art in relation to architecture

Isbn 9788774075585
Publisher The Danish Architectural Press
Idea code 250839
€ 52.25

In Scandinavia, when the state builds, a small percentage of total construction costs is allocated for art. This policy ensures creativity becomes an intrinsic component of the built environment rather than an afterthought. Yet the spatial implications and artistic dimensions that result from this funding mechanism are rarely studied. This volume explores the relationship between art and architecture in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Contemporary case studies weave together histories of cross-disciplinary collaboration, cultural policy, and environmental concerns, mapping a sophisticated framework for grasping the multiple dimensions of art interventions within architecture.

Isbn 9783856764784
Publisher Gta Verlag
Idea code 250834
€ 25.55

The International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design (ILAUD) was an influential platform for rethinking urban discourse and pedagogy in the 1970s and '80s. Founded by Giancarlo De Carlo with Team X members, it brought together architects, teachers, and students from Europe and North America to explore user participation, building reuse, and eclecticism. Though its theoretical discussions shaped architectural education and practice, ILAUD's impact remains understudied. Contributors examine the laboratory's early years through conceptual, methodological, and geographical perspectives.

Publisher Dpr-Barcelona
Idea code 250820

A multiplicity of dynamics are driving rapid infrastructural transitions in cities, transforming cultures of movement, both human and non-human. But these are all too often narrated at scales that surpass the embodied experiences of those that live them every day. To better understand the bodily and cultural implications of these transformations, we can learn from the performing arts. ‘Staging Ground’ assembles on-site investigations, critical reflections, and performative scores, developed through a creative research programme led by Theatrum Mundi. These strategies can be enacted anywhere, expanding the tools available for thinking, making, and inhabiting mobility infrastructures.

Idea code 250817

Do you remember the series of lectures and teachers from your days studying? No? Camilla van Deurs does. She remembers one supervisor and professor in particular: Jan Gehl. Not just for his knowledge, but for the way he communicated it. Jan Gehl let the conclusions from his research wander like anecdotes and repeated them until they stuck. From lecturer to student. From one generation of architects and urban planners to the next. 'Good City – The Short Version' is a collection of 24 short stories in which Gehl’s research work is translated into easy-to-understand reflections on city life. About the divide between architecture and urban planning on the drawing board and the concrete, lived city. About small spaces and big experiences.

The canton in the South of Switzerland has a unique microclimate, a widespread infrastructure network, accessto construction and energy resources, diverse migration flows, and a rich cultural heritage. Over the course of three semesters, students at ETH Zurich developed projects with different time horizons – from temporary, circular to permanent – that address central aspects ofthe Ticino territory: climate change, an aging demographic, and resource use. This publication illustrates not only the specific projects but also their underlying design ideas and highlights how the narrative is key to communicating new strategies.

Ungers After All. Fragments of a Project for Gibellina

Isbn 9791281790353
Publisher Viaindustriae
Idea code 250783

Following the 1968 earthquake in Sicily, plans were produced for the total reconstruction of the destroyed town of Gibellina, inspired by the models of the English New Towns. After an initial phase in which international architects and artists participated in the urban redesign, in the late 1970s a series of seminars and workshops was held at the University of Palermo to take stock of the reconstruction. Oswald Mathias Ungers (1926–2007) was then called to design the town’s central area, which was still undefined. His Civic Centre proposal reflected on the relationship between built and public space, and between city, monument, and history. Ultimately, however, little was realised.

Vietnamese Objects. The Material Culture of Resilience in the Face of (de)colonization

Isbn 9783038630906
Publisher Triest Verlag
Idea code 250741
€ 29.15

Cà phê (coffee), cà phê phin (coffee filter), atisô (artichoke), xi nê ma (cinema), căng tin (canteen), xi-măng (cement), ghế tô nê (Thonet chair): In the Vietnamese language, many words and names of everyday objects clearly show their French origins. Through cultural anthropology, epistemology of Vietnamese design, and the sociology of objects, the research project 'Objets Vietnamiens' analyses the production of objects in Vietnam in the light of French colonization and decolonization. By means of reports, interviews, and research in various archival collections, the book reveals the mechanisms through which objects, foods, materials, and expertise became integrated into Vietnam to the point that they now display authentically Vietnamese characteristics. Through the prism of design and applied arts, Quang Vinh Nguyen and Émelie Laystary take a decolonial and critical look at the creativity and adaptability of a country that has managed to appropriate the techniques of a dominant power. The resulting research work also becomes an archive of the present and provides insight into everyday life in Vietnam then and now.

The Art of Building — William Morris

Isbn 9781838282134
Publisher Zegris
Idea code 250661
€ 17.50

The Art of Building is a collection of essays on architecture by William Morris (1834–1896), revealing him as an ecological designer avant la lettre. In these essays, Morris develops his philosophy of simplicity, equality, and care for nature in relation to architecture, presenting the integrated vision that has led to his recognition as a forerunner to both the Bauhaus and today’s environmental movements. The themes include building quality housing for all, preserving nature, using local building materials, a surprisingly ecological vision of high-density living, and a proto-minimalist approach to interior decoration. These texts reveal an author many associate primarily with floral patterns at his most radical, modern, and prescient—demonstrating a thinker thoroughly relevant to our present moment.

Architecture and Modern Life — W. R. Lethaby

Isbn 9781838282141
Publisher Zegris
Idea code 250662
€ 17.50

Architecture and Modern Life is a collection of essays by influential architect and educator W. R. Lethaby (1857–1931). In these writings, Lethaby foreshadows Le Corbusier and marks a fascinating transitional point between 19th- and 20th-century architectural thought. With radical foresight, he argues for an “efficiency style” in architecture, for towns that cultivate vitality, and against the science of “profit grinding and grabbing.” Often eerily prescient, phrases such as “there is a culture war going forward” and “There is much talk of Housing at the present time, but it is a case of much talk and little house” could be taken from today’s newspapers. The profound importance of these texts lies in Lethaby’s vision of art and design grounded not in style-novelty or aesthetic theory (“the mystification of architecture”) but in “some reality like health, serviceableness, or even perfect cheapness.”
