Purple 29: Index 76

Isbn
Publisher Purple Institute
Idea code 18064
€ 29.55

"The first Purple Index lists 76 of the most creative people in art and fashion - in alphabetical order to avoid any kind of hierarchy. Each was photographed or portrayed through their work. Of course, this number is arbitrary. (...) All these artists are highly innovative and influential, not only in what they do, but also in how they do it: methodically, ironically, obsessively, or intuitively, and always with style. We interviewed them to understand how they innovate, express themselves, and move forward in a period when creativity is everywhere and relevance is rare." - Oliver Zahm. Featuring among others Maurizio Cattelan, Demna Gvasalia, Anne Imhof, Rei Kawakubo, Kiko Mizuhara, Shayne Oliver, Miuccia Prada, Juergen Teller, and Amanda Wall.

Flaneur Issue 07: Treze De Maio, Sao Paulo

Isbn 9783945918036
Publisher Edition Messner
Idea code 18067
€ 18.00

For their latest and boldest issue to date, Flaneur immersed itself in the complex layers of São Paulo’s Treze de Maio. In collaboration with multi-disciplinary artists, academics, and locals, Flaneur embraces the street’s complexity, its layers and fragmented nature with a literary approach. The street Treze de Maio (13th of May) here is both a place and a time: the 13th of May 1888, the day of the official abolishment of slavery in Brazil. In that way the issue reads the city layer by layer, forming a multi-voiced collection of contributions that are interwoven with the editor’s outsider voice that explores the reoccurring themes within them. With contributions by, among others, Karlla Girotto and Alessandro Marques, Camila Svenson and Pétala Lopes, Paulo Nimer Pjota, Guilherme Wisnik, Tatewaki Nio and Andre Collazio.

Yoshihiko Ueda - Forest Impressions And Memories, 1989-2017

Isbn 9784861526619
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 18088
€ 130.00

Yoshihiko Ueda’s work spans a broad range of photographic categories, from landscapes to nature, portraiture, and still life, and is characterised by his pursuit of the “whole” – capturing the very essence and energy of bodies and their environments. His oeuvre thus reflects a process of tracing topographies, especially when it comes to his images of forests, which he began making three decades ago. Conventionally attractive landscape photography holds no interest for Ueda, a fact that becomes clear as we are plunged into the depths of the Quinault Rain Forest in Washington State, the Yakushima cedar forests in southern Japan, and the virgin forest of the Kasuga Taisha shrine in Nara.

The fact that Araki Nobuyoshi has published over 500 photobooks as of 2017 lends credence to his insatiable appetite. This volume coincides with an exhibition of Araki’s work at Tokyo’s Opera City Gallery and offers an overview of his recent oeuvre, which deals in particular with life and death. Among the featured series are “Dai Koga”, “One Hundred Views of Flowers”, the video archive “POLANOGRAPHY”, “Captive Women in a Pleasure Garden”, and “Non-Diary Diary”. Includes an interview.

Commonplace Tamsyn Adams And Sophie Feyder

Isbn 9780992226381
Publisher Fourthwall Books
Idea code 18120
€ 48.45

Two private photographic collections from South Africa form the basis of this book. The first dates back to the 1850s, the album of a white family built up over several generations. The second comprises the work of two black African photographers, father and son, active during the 1950s and ’60s. The blunt juxtaposition suggests the varied ways in which lives lived in different times and places, and under very disparate circumstances, might nevertheless be tied to each other. The images acknowledge the quiet stories taking place at the margins of South Africa’s history of racial inequality and strife. The book and its research are part of an ongoing collaboration between the authors.

Haabre, The Last Generation Photographs By Joana Choumali

Isbn 9780992240493
Publisher Fourthwall Books
Idea code 18121
€ 48.45

Joana Choumali is fascinated with African people of different social origins who proudly display their facial scarification. But the practice is disappearing in her native Ivory Coast and the surrounding countries, due to pressure from religious and state authorities and urban practices. Choumali’s work involves the link between past and present, as well as self-image. For this project she sought out the “last generation” of people who bear the imprint of the past on their faces. What was once the norm, indicating social standing or tribe, is now excluded. Through portraits and testimonies, the series illustrates the complexity of identity in contemporary Africa, torn between its past and future.

Hans Bol - God's Allies

Isbn 9789080876743
Publisher Recto Verso Publications
Idea code 18098
€ 27.50

Crows, with their black plumage, their sparkling, bright eyes, and dark, shimmering beaks, belong to the night and to witches, heralds of doom and disaster. But their playful and unpredictable behaviour has also made them widely symbolic. In ancient times, they were even worshipped. The god Odin was accompanied by two ravens, representing “memory” and “thought”. The concept of the crow as a symbol of the two principle faculties of humans is irresistible. You are never alone when crows are present. Photographer Hans Bol presents a tribute to the crow family, from the smallest jackdaws to the larger rooks and ravens, illustrating a fascination with these mysterious birds.

Annelies De Mey, Black Mountain Conversations

Isbn 9789490800734
Publisher Art Paper Editions
Idea code 18066
€ 25.00

'The Black Mountain' is the archetype of a mountain that seems unmountable and indestructible because of its steep mountainside. The past and future can have no influence on its power and immortality. Annelies de Mey has respect for the absoluteness of the mountain. She believes in the moment of encounter and waits for the moon, the sun and the snow. ‘Black Mountain Conversations’ offers the possibility to look at and experience the book in three different ways. If we flip the book backwards, we only see the soft, blue sky. If we flip the book from front to back we only see the Black Mountain. But if we just leaf through the book, the images of the mountain and the sky alternate each other.

Genda 2: Animals As Permanent Followers

Isbn 9788887071726
Publisher A+m Bookstore
Idea code 18117
€ 21.50

‘GENDA’ is a magazine intersecting Western and Eastern culture. Two sets of editorial staff – one in Italy and one in China – first identify a common theme, which is then elaborated through the misunderstandings and complicities at the base of every concrete exchange. Its second instalment deals with the complex territory of human relationships with animals – as presences that follow, range ahead, wait, influence, hide, observe. Our constant, everyday interactions with animals can transform them into either food or idolised objects of worship. Their apparition can be a mirror that gauges distance and formulates a bond of indifference, morbid obsession, or even dependency.

Eyes Wild Open

Isbn 9791092265668
Publisher Andre Frere Editions
Idea code 18110
€ 42.45

This book highlights the relationships that exist between several generations of photographers whose practice is as intuitive as it is abrupt or transgressive. Emerging after World War II with pioneers such as Robert Frank, William Klein, and the founders of the legendary Japanese magazine ‘Provoke’, this singular approach to photography remains particularly productive in contemporary creation. Gathering this family of photographers, whose work together spans more than 60 years, this book allows the reader to visualise the links between past and present, rediscover classics, find new talents, and understand the various influences of this photographic heritage up until today.

Kasper Akhoj - Welcome (To The Teknival) E-1027 By Eileen Gray

Isbn 9783906217116
Publisher B. Frank Books
Idea code 18038
€ 43.00

For this book, Danish artist and photographer Kasper Akhøj documented the ongoing restoration of E-1027, Eileen Gray’s modernist villa in France. Based on photographs taken by Gray which were first published in 1929, Akhøj’s photographs are a kind of remake, recreating the perspective and composition of the originals. During several visits to the villa between 2009 and 2017, he produced up to six versions of each of Gray’s images, but only included one of them here. The overlap of chronologies emphasises the restoration process and references the fascinating influence of a succession of occupants. With essays by Beatriz Colomina and Amy Zion, plus an interview with Akhøj.

Irina Popova is a documentary photographer and curator known for her special interest in the subjects of privacy, sincerity, and marginality. Published in 2017 by Dostoevsky Publishing, Amsterdam, this is the second version of her 2014 photobook, ‘If You Have a Secret’. Besides its vivid, colourful portraits, the new edition has a different design, double-folded “secret” pages, and other intriguing features. Only about three quarters of the photographs are the same as in the previous edition, and the texts have also been revised and re-edited.

Nico Joana Weber - Monstera Deliciosa

Isbn 9783946848035
Publisher Grass Publishers
Idea code 18047
€ 2.00

This artist’s book by Nico Joana Weber mounts an insightful and calculated photographic investigation into the dichotomy of rational (European) modernism in architecture versus the “irrational” proliferation of nature in tropical regions. Citing a range of historical and cultural references, from Le Corbusier’s visits to Argentina and Niemeyer’s Brazilian modernism, to the Amazonian expeditions of Lévi-Strauss, her vast collection of images points to how the fragile balance between architecture, the body, and vegetation inherent to the tropics shifts the separation between nature and culture so crucial to the Western perspective into the realm of the impossible.

David Maisel - Mount St. Helens: Afterlife

Isbn 9788494509629
Publisher Ivorypress
Idea code 18111
€ 33.05

As a young photographer, David Maisel travelled to Mount St. Helens in 1983, just three years after the volcano erupted in a devastating blast which flattened forests and claimed the lives of many people. Witnessing the radical transformation of the land on such a massive, incomprehensible scale affected him deeply, and set the course for his future work. Reconsidering these images more than three decades later, Maisel can appreciate them with greater clarity. The pictures are both desolate and delicate, and show a young artist at work, experimenting with new techniques and wrestling with the traditions of landscape art. With texts by Gary Snyder and Marcia Bjornerud.

Dolph Kessler - The Wave Crossing The Atlantic

Isbn 9789082187380
Publisher Mauritsheech Publishers
Idea code 18051
€ 40.60

The Atlantic Ocean comprises an inconceivable volume of water, having an average depth of 4000 metres and covering approximately one fifth of the earth’s surface. Yet all we really see is its most superficial layer, the constant motion of waves, changing every second for millions of years. Photographer Dolph Kessler offers a collection of immutable snapshots of this mesmerising reality, each one a testament to the infinite variety in which ocean waves can manifest, their different moods, and volatile nature, from gentle wavelets to raging masses of water. The large-format images reflect a reverent, almost oceanographic fascination with the endless cycle of tide, wind, and water.

Michael Kerstgens - The Final Winter

Isbn 9783941249196
Publisher Peperoni
Idea code 18040
€ 36.00

When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, people celebrated in Germany and many other parts of the world. Less than a year later, the reunification of East and West Germany became a reality. At the same time, further east, the Soviet Union crumbled. Although the political chaos there was widely reported, the dramatic consequences for the population were buried in the jubilation over reunification. German photographer Michael Kerstgens travelled to Moscow in the winter of 1990/91 to document the atmosphere in the city. The images he made more than 25 years ago portray the harshness and desolation of the city, the powerlessness, anger, and desperation of the discouraged people.

Andre Luetzen Up-River Book

Isbn 9783941249172
Publisher Peperoni
Idea code 18041
€ 38.20

André Lützen visited the Congo twice, travelling up the Congo River on a United Nations patrol boat and taking pictures, both aboard and ashore. The route coincides in large part with that of Joseph Conrad’s steamer voyage of 1890. Like Conrad, who became disillusioned after just six months, Lützen saw it as a journey into the “heart of darkness”. Everything – the climate, flora, and fauna, the river itself, the restless people, the mud and garbage – seems foreign, threatening, dangerous. Pressing crowds, deep shadows, shimmering heat, and a feeling of latent violence permeate the reality he portrays, where photographs and macro shots of the human retina form a feverish dream.

James Geurts - Floodplain

Isbn 9780648262800
Publisher Perimeter Editions
Idea code 18116
€ 33.00

‘Floodplain’ illuminates the ongoing tension between nature and culture embodied by Australia’s Yarra River. The floods that Melbourne periodically experiences are physical manifestations of the profound lack of understanding that European settlers had of the river before they set about altering and developing it. Through a practice involving field research, archival material, site-specific interventions, and works on paper, James Geurts examines how the river has been dammed, widened, straightened, and rerouted, its banks encased in concrete and its marshlands covered. His project emphasises the dynamics of the ancient river and its turbulent relationship with colonisation.

Nenge - By Yuichi Ikeda, Eisuke Komatsubara

Isbn 9784861526435
Publisher Seigensha
Idea code 18087
€ 36.85

‘Kado’ is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, and the fact that artistically arranging plants and vessels has become a culture in its own right is closely related to religious elements and flower offerings in Shinto and Buddhism. It is just one aspect that is representative of the deep connection to nature within Japanese culture. Its people have honed their sense of beauty through their sensible perception of the impermanence inherent in plants. This book neither draws on currents of the traditional ‘kado’ nor follows Western styles of flower arrangement. Ignoring rules and conventions, designer and chef Shinichiro Ogata aims to communicate a new, daring notion of “contemporary flowers”.
