Gerrit Rietveld - Wealth Of Sobriety

Isbn 9789082135466
Publisher Lectura Cultura
Idea code 18655
€ 68.05

A huge monograph dedicated to Gerrit Rietveld, perhaps the most well-known Dutch architect. Besides his iconic Schröder House, very little is known about the roughly 100 houses Rietveld designed and built during his career. These houses are characterised by light and space, and sobriety is a basic principle in his approach. Only a small group of intellectual clients commissioned him to design an avant-garde residence. Photographer Arjan Bronkhorst went in search of these unknown houses, photographing their interiors and residents, while authors Willemijn Zwikstra, Marc van den Eerenbeemt and Ida van Zijl explored archives and interviewed current residents about living in a Rietveld house.

Formation Architectural Education In A Nordic Perspective

Isbn 9788792700247
Publisher The Architectural Publisher B
Idea code 18629
€ 40.00

Published by the Nordic Baltic Academy of Architecture, an organisation that represents schools of architecture across the entire Nordic and Baltic region, this volume functions as an introductory formation for the field of architectural education and creates a starting point for further investigations. It reflects the long traditions of teaching architecture the schools have built, but also the need for a system that enables perspective on how different structural changes impact not only the institutional identity or the profession but also the teaching of the discipline. Included are contributions from Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Bertram, Massimo Santanicchia, Veronika Valk-Siska, and many more.

Dirty Furniture 4/6: Closet

Isbn 9780993351136
Publisher Dirty Furniture
Idea code 18682
€ 11.40

The fourth issue of the independent design magazine that focuses on uncovering the relationship between people and the things we live with takes the closet as its theme. It considers things like decluttering, moths, fashion, modularity, and coming out, but also questions the need for storage when goods and items are constantly available and in flow. Through contributions by Alice Twemlow, Jeremy Atherton Lin, Philippa Snow, Rob Gallagher, Brian Dillon, and Clare Lyster, time capsules are excavated, portals are entered, and avatars are dressed. Additionally, the issue features an interview with an archivist and a storage hunter.

Graduation 2018 Design Academy Eindhoven

Isbn 9789491400407
Publisher Design Academy Eindhoven
Idea code 18641
€ 39.00

Published with the 2018 graduation show of the Design Academy Eindhoven, this volume offers a platform for addressing aspects of design practice that underpin or transcend the object, and the connecting themes. “There is something paradoxical about the contemporary design school,” write Joseph Grima and Jurriënne Ossewold in the introduction. Successfully arguing that everything is design, and that design is relevant to everything, risks becoming the institution’s undoing. It mirrors the demand for an increasingly specialised set of individuals who must respond to increasingly complex problems. With new insight, young designers can shape the future of design education.

Lautner A-Z Zoektocht Naar Het Volledige Gebouwde Oeuvre

Isbn 9789491444432
Publisher Artez Press
Idea code 18630
€ 40.35

Handboek Over Het Ontwerpen Van Gebruiksvoorwerpen

Isbn 9789491444449
Publisher Artez Press
Idea code 18643
€ 34.50

Eduardo Souto Moura - Casa Das Artes

Isbn 9789895409822
Publisher Amag Publisher
Idea code 18519
€ 32.25

One of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura, Casa das Artes was designed in the early 1980s and completed construction in 1991. The building is located in the gardens of a neoclassical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The competition programme proposed a cinema, auditorium, an exhibition gallery, and required that the surroundings be preserved as they were. According to the architect, “Work was not allowed to interfere with the garden. Omitting was more important than proposing, deleting was more important than designing, and simplicity more important than composition.” This monograph reflects his very minimalistic approach.

Oase 101: Microcosm - Searching For The City

Isbn 9789462084698
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 18684
€ 22.30

In the modern city, everyday life is increasingly moving towards the inside of buildings. The interiors of department stores, market halls, administration buildings, museums, or theatres are part of the experience of the urban dweller. Every inner world of the city has its own atmosphere and representative architectural language that supports its specific societal significance. In contemporary practice, these differences have largely disappeared. The more the exterior of buildings is invested with spectacular gestures, the more banal their interiors seem to become. Rather than registering this disappearance, this issue of OASE examines a range of strategies and design instruments for the public urban interior.

Porocity - Opening Up Solidity

Isbn 9789462084599
Publisher Nai010 Publishers
Idea code 18650
€ 32.05

Our cities consist of buildings that are introverted and not mixed with urban life. They are closed. How to open them? How can we introduce pockets for encounters, for streams of circulation, for green areas, for tunnels of cooling...? What logics can be imagined in our towers to allow for this openness? Using stepped floors? Creating grottos? Splitting towers? Twisting blocks? Every hypothesis leads to a series of interventions. How far can we go before the tower collapses, before it is unaffordable? Together, these series form an army of towers that contributes to a more porous city.

The issue also features four finalist proposals in the competition for the Maritime History Museum in Saint-Malo, in France, in which Kengo Kuma and Barozzi Veiga were ex aequo winners. The ‘construction’ section focuses on rammed earth, a sustainable alternative for load-bearing walls that stands out for its availability, excellent thermal behaviour, recyclability, and vast formal and aesthetic potential.

Nicolas Combarro - Arquitectura Espontanea - Croquis

Isbn
Publisher Cabeza De Chorlito
Idea code 18633
€ 14.50

‘Croquis’ is the fourth instalment of Spanish photographer and artist Nicólas Combarro’s “spontaneous architecture” series. The project is based on a particular vision of contemporary architecture that is free, unregulated, and spontaneously generated. The observation, documentation, and reflection around these images generates a diverse archive, starting from photography and evolving through various transformations: pictorial interventions, collages, and post-architectural sketches. The set forms a kind of laboratory, or even a cabinet of curiosities, where values that are generally hidden or even reviled are deconstructed or decontextualized, giving them new meaning and outlook.

A+U 578 18:11 Architecture In Norway And Denmark Rail Corridor In Singapore

Isbn 9784900212282
Publisher Shinkenchiku-sha
Idea code 18649
€ 23.90

Norwegian and Danish approaches to designing with nature is the first feature of this issue. Local architects point to a variety of sustainability concerns in the region, resulting in architecture that is sensitive and responsive, cities that are inclusive and liveable. With works by Studio Olafur Eliasson, Dorte Mandrup, Sverre Fehn, Manthey Kula, and Atelier Oslo. The second feature deals with the Rail Corridor in Singapore, a former railway line that has become an informal public space in the city. From 2015, design professionals were invited to develop proposals in hopes of establishing strategies and tools to ensure integration with surrounding communities and shape the quality of experience.

Brick, Brick What Do You Want To Be?

Isbn 9788968010842
Publisher Damdi
Idea code 18568
€ 26.65

Material in architecture is generally associated with its individual and distinctive main characteristic, a reduced description which often undermines the ambiguity and true meaning of materiality. Material is often employed based on or with fundamental focus on expressing this preconceived identity, leaving space and material devaluated of their opportunities and possibilities. This publication examines materials in architecture through the eyes of the architects themselves. Interviews with 33 practices from around the world – including OFIS arhitekti, UNStudio, Casanova + Hernandez, and CEBRA –shed light on current paradigm shifts in brick and tile, wood, and glass.

C3 Special: Architecture - Pseudo-Public Pseudo-Private

Isbn 20925190
Publisher C3 Publishing
Idea code 18570
€ 30.40

The concepts of public and private are not diametrically opposed, but rather exist on a continuum. The success of public architecture is determined by the interaction between the two, for both the individual and the collective. Here ‘C3’ considers how public ownership and privatisation play out across several typologies, from open spaces and swimming pools, to mixed-use buildings and museums. Among the featured projects are the Amos Rex Museum by JKMM Architects, Dominique Perrault’s Paris Longchamp Racecourse, Aarhus Harbour Bath by BIG, the Palestinian Museum by Heneghan Peng Architects, and the Apple Piazza Liberty by Foster + Partners.

C3 398: Courthouses

Isbn 20925190
Publisher C3 Publishing
Idea code 18665
€ 27.25

Courts of law are projections of civic power into the built environment. States have traditionally expressed themselves with monumentality, with its implications of permanence, but modern government aspires to transparency, which society also expects. Five projects demonstrate how architects address these tensions, among them the Paris Courthouse by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the Palace of Justice in Córdoba by Mecanoo + AYESA. In addition, five recently completed cultural warehouses by KOKO Architects, Franklin Azzi, and others show how various design strategies can be implemented in the conversion of industrial buildings to other functions.

Bruno Munari - Invece Del Campanello

Isbn 9788875701147
Publisher Corraini Edizioni
Idea code 18577
€ 20.15

“Nearly everybody’s got the same doorbell / The bronze clapper’s almost gone by the board / I’ve half a mind to invent something / instead of the doorbell”. Bruno Munari and Davide Mosconi applied structures and machines producing the most strange and different sounds to a series of doors “instead of the ringing doorbell”. Sounds are related with the imaginary owner of the door: for example ringing at Pietro di Pietra the geologist’s door means using a knocker on a stone. These doors were shown in 1991 at the Danese showroom in Milan and are shown again in Lualdi Porte showroom for Bruno Munari’s birth centenary.
